Since the question is would I trust my life to a .38 sp, the platform (revolver) and it's reliability (very high) are in play as there aren't in semi-auto .38 sp that I am aware of.
I think the .38 sp j frame SW revolver is just about the best pocket gun around. Very, very reliable-which is...
Another good thing about the .357 is that there are med vel loads that bridge the gap between full power .357s and .38 +Ps for those who want them. Have it your way.
I am just in the process of getting my m44 zeroed. As of right now, I have fired 3 rounds total out of it and have a 1.5" group at 50 yards, but in the five ring. Needs to be pulled down and to the right a little to be dead on. Seems that it will be accurate enough at 100 yards for deer if I...
My shotguns are basically set up for buckshot. Big Dots, big white beads, etc. I don't think of them as anything but a pistol-ranged weapon. However, if I were to dedicate a shotgun as a trunk gun, it would be rifle sights and slugs all the way.
I live in a suburban / rural setting. I use a single shot .410 for a raccoon / mean dog gun. It is mounted in a place that is hidden but available. I keep it loaded with a 3" #4 birdshot round for raccoons. If a mean dog has to be taken care of (on my property and threatening) I keep silver...
For me, surplus rifle = inexpensive. So, it came down to the MN and a Yugo Mauser. When I looked at the ammo, I found I could stack deeper and cheaper with the MN.
I got an M44, an extra barrel for it, and a 91/30 parts gun with a crapload of ammo for 400-. :)
They will both do the job...
IMO, SKSs are overpriced at this point. I would pass on it, get an AK instead, and then buy a couple mosins down the road.
Or, if $ is tight, buy the mosin(s) now, then save for the AK.
I think they are fairly popular, especially the P95 and variations of.
I have considered one in the past as a 2nd 9mm, although the SW sigma is right there as well in that role.
I think of the Ruger autos as the "American Bersa" and I mean that in a good way. Inexpensive relative to...
True. Although, I don't consider a bunch of bears walking around in the burbs or a small town to be the wild, as I am sure you don't either.
Sure, it can get "wild" if one smells food and is coming through your door, but that isn't the wild. Same with a mountain lion attacking a jogger...
Don't hate on the lion for being a lion. It is the nature of the lion. The large predators will be gone world-wide soon enough. They are really just about there.
We have done the job on them here in the US, where there is no true "wild" left. Sure there are a few places where you might get...
Ruger should have made it a poly copy of the Colt Detective Special.
6 shots in a compact design? Would have sold like hotcakes if priced around a J frame, provided it was reliable. I would have strongly considered one.
But, they screwed it up.
