    45-70 killing power

As others mentioned, a combination of drop tube (mine is 24") and a touch of compression before seating the slug. Iffen one trys to compress with the slug, it tends to distort it. Later at the range there will be with a great gnashing of teeth and mentally kicking one self about being stupid...

    Clean up time

Given I use slant breech rifles its no trouble removing the barrel and placing it breech end into a pan-bucket of my fav cleaning material (Murphys oil soap and HOT water) then doing the butter churn number with a wetted patch on the cleaning rod (tight fit jag). The solution gets "pumped" by...

    Toxicity of Black Powder Residue/Smoke?

A nit picker here... :D Not exactly sulphur powder rather sulpha which is the alternative to pennicillin for folks allergic to same... ;) Link to a little WW2 medical history... http://home.att.net/~steinert/wwii.htm That said, the catch with all MSDS info and dosages mentioned is that its...

Know nothing about BP, have Kentucky Rifle craving

Distance across the flats of the octagon. Bet iffen ya went back you might find that those are smaller caliber barrels as well like .30ish to .45 size. One of the Hawkens I built from parts (not a kit) uses a GM .50 with a 1" across the flats 36" ML barrel. With the 1:72 twist it does a fine...

Know nothing about BP, have Kentucky Rifle craving

Believe Traditions and CVA make the stuff Cabellas sells. Percussion is easier to learn with, not necessarily better. Just getting accustomed to the concept of holding through the shot is what makes the difference twixt a capable rock lock shootist and one thats just flippin' lead down the...

First ML rifle, which one? POLL

Im partial to the T/C Hawken (earlier without QLA framise is my preference but...). 1:48 is reasonable for short slugs and RB. The lifetime waranty is the best bar none and for folks wanting slower or faster twist, or different calibers its pretty much a drop n' swap. Sorta like the T/C...

    why two triggers?

Double sets are a love-hate thing. I used to only rely on the unset condition, then I dropped the transfer case in my Scout on my hand and cut the flexor tendon in my trigger finger. That oops now prevents it from full movement to just slightly over 90* max bend at the 1st joint and no bend at...

300 gr SST Enough for NM ELK??

Just fer grins, you check the NM regs? Some states like CO have a minimum caliber of .54 for elk with ML. D.

Can a blackpowder revolver be left loaded indefinitely?

Makes perfect sense, even iffen he misses the flash is enough to scare someone into submission, particularly in the dark. Then theres the smoke screen effect... :D D.

Looking at starting up blackpowder shooting....

Theres truth in that statement. Ive been shooting BP since around '76 and while I'll grant that rocklocks are not really a good start unless one is really willing to learn (hopefully from someone thats knows the idiosyncrasies), a traditional cap lock is as reliable as an inline and with a...

    muzzleloader scope ???????????

My shortest ML is my '76 vintage T/C Hawken. Both home builts are 32 and 36" barreled. I have a LONG way to go before I run out of barrel length to relocate the rear sight... :D Off the cuff I dont own any rifle with a barrel shorter than 26" and the 12 ga is a M97 with the full choke 32" D.

    muzzleloader scope ???????????

Fer some of us with old wore out eye balls its either that or move the rear sight forward about a foot or 2... ;) :D D.

    muzzleloader scope ???????????

Eye relief depends on the scope optics design. I say this because the MVA scope on my Sharps .45-70 is set up roughly around 2-3" per their idiot book and havent been dinged yet. Might add that a typical pistol scope has the 6" or longer relief because of how one holds at arms reach (as it...

    muzzleloader scope ???????????

No difference Zip, zero, none-no difference except iffen yer trying to be historically correct on a later ML, then the Malcom style shows up that may or may not have optics inside and can be up to 24x. Just keep an eye on the front lens as it can get fuzzy from the smoke now and again and get...

    Info about Sharps rifles

With everyone else posting up their Sharps, heres mine. #3 Shiloh .45-70 32" Heavy with MVA scope... IIRC $2400 all told and I picked it up at Big Timber to avoid the FFL fiasco- shipping dither. The advantage of living in the state where they're made... :D Sorry about the pic quality, I'm a...

do you reload while sitting or standing? Why?

Same thoughts here, plus when using a 24" drop tube on my .45-70 BPCR loads, sitting doesn't work. D.

    Info about Sharps rifles

Probably the easiest to do is the .45-70 as reloading components are easy to find pretty much everywhere and not terribly out of line iffen one uses something like the Black Dawge or 10X cartridges $ wise (about $22-24/20). D.
