    On Fighting Shotguns....

My house gun is a Norinco coach gun side by side 12 bore. Open choked. Two loads of number six reside in the barrels. I live in a tiny ass log cabin, with less than 600 sq ft. It is more than effective.

    Backup sights?

Evening folks. Anyone ever use the New England Custom peep sights? My current elk and bear thumper, a Ruger mk2 338 win mag, is great and all, but it lacks sights. Has anyone seen or used the peep that clamps into the rear mount? It's offseason now for the gun, and theres a few things I'd...

    Remington 700 or CZ###

I like the CZ. It's modeled after true classic hunting rifles. Remingtons are fine, but way too pricey for what you get. Besides, the CZ is a Mauser.

    Buckshot for black bear...really??

Ive taken bears that weighed 400 lbs,, with 18 inch skulls. Down the road from my place, a fellow killed a 670 sumthin pounder. We grow them big up here.

    Buckshot for black bear...really??

Just make sure your gun isn't a full choke. Full choke sucks with buck. I myself prefer number one, as it leaves less gaps in the pattern. I don't prefer buckshot for bears, but have killed with it. Where I live, it rains 240 inches a year, and it gets dang thick. The last place I want a wounded...

Are Tikka rifles controlled feed or push feed?

I agree with a CZ being a better rifle. That, and with crf,, you can launch the cases far off, or gently eject them so you can take them out and save them.

    320yd neck shot

Ive taken a few neck shots. I myself have no problem trailing a deer for 20-100 yards. It's part of hunting. As for the DRT thing, I guess if it makes you happy. DROT(dead right over there) works for me also. Nah Ridgerunner, it's not much my clients that make me shy from it. It comes from...

    320yd neck shot

Shunning chest shots b/c its close to the guts makes no sense when you think about how small the hit area of the neck is.

    320yd neck shot

I am asking in the interest of objectivity. Many will state the best results, but leave the rest out. Objectivity is being able to say, for exp, You love your rifle b/c of so and so, but also being able to list it's shortcomings. If a man takes all neck shots, he's bound to miss, and or cripple...

do you enjoy shooting the big magnums?

I find that my 338's are more comfy than most 300's i have shot.

Neck shooting Deer with an arrow,

I'd forget all about archery neck shots. I'd rather a deer run 30 yards than half a mile because you missed a very very tough shot.

    Arrow penetration on game

I shoot a long bow and a recurve. I have recieved nothing but clear pass throughs on blacktail deer, elk(two subspecies) black bear and whitetails. Most drop within 50 yards. I agree that animals arent very good targets to get practice on. But in my exp, especially traditional archers...

    Next Gun Purchase and Why?

A Ruger Hawkeye 375 Ruger. Alaskan version. Metal finish is of my least concern. The gun is light, not whippy. Sturdy, not overbuilt. Handsome, not beautifull. The sights are wonderfull and I am totally enamoured by medium bores.

    Heavy Rifle

I would say "heavy" rifles begin at 404's. The 338 and 375's are good mediums, heavy to most, but still mediums. It's rather in vogue now to tout the 45-70. That's fine and good, but the 45-70 is not a true fight stopper. For most all general big game hunting in N America, even Africa, the 338...

    Scope Mounts

Picitinny rails. Every one goes on and on about how you can swap scopes and swap this and that. Who cares? When I mount an optic, it lives there untill it breaks or finds a better replacement. I dont care for a crossbolt holding my rings on. Eye relief is a simple enough thing to find without...

    Controlled feed vs Push feed?

while not a snob about it, I do prefer crf. While bear hunting in rainforest condidtions, in near jungle conditions, I prefer the safety and security of the claw. Up here, the foliage is dense, green, wet, and darn near inpenatrable. The bears grow heavy, long, and testy. It just makes me...

    Scope Mounts

I myself prefer a one piece bar mount, windage adjustable rear, dovetail front on most of my rifles. Maybe not as accurate as the claims say, but I can vouch for the strength of the system. Two pieces are a little easier to load. On rings, I prefer four screws per ring. I love the Ruger mounts...

    Saiga rifle vs. SKS

I believe I would carry the SKS. When I lived in AR, it left little to be desired. It excelled at close to medium range close up fast hunting. It was utterly reliable in every sort of ugly scenario. And being able to use stripper clips is an awesome asset in a fight, plinking, or loading up for...
