I'll second Pilot's vote for the CZ75B PCR. A compact with the ergonomics of the 75B, but with a lighter alloy frame.

I'm no expert, but I have to agree with the shotgun/9mm school. I got my Rem 870 used for $150, then added a short barrel for another hundred. A 9mm something can be easily found for under $400. That leaves $350 for ammo and range time. RT55
