If you can swing the $$$ I recommend the Nikon D40. They can be had for $480 new, and I've seen factory refurbs near $400. 6MP is plenty for most uses (guns included) and I really think if you want to play around with photography you will be MUCH better off with a digital SLR. Better low light...
Model 60's made before 1996 were chambered for 38 SPL, since then they are 357 Magnum. Why not use a new model number? Don't know, S&W did/does some wierd things with their numbering scheme.
If you post your guns serial number I or someone else can look up an approximate date of manufacture...
A few years back I ran some Winchester white box 240gr JSP over my chrono from a 4 5/8" Super Blackhawk and the average velocity was 1325fps. Using that velocity, Speer's published ballistics tables and some extrapolation, that 240gr bullet would likely be traveling at 800-900fps at 300 yards...
I'll add a couple of S&W's, separated by about 60 years:
38/44 Heavy Duty, shipped from S&W in JUly, 1946
Model 22-4, bought new in 2006 & shown with an El Paso Saddlery holster

I'm pretty well insured.
If I lost every gun that I own my plan would be:
ASAP after filing police report, etc., buy a S&W/Ruger 38 or 357 revolver and a 12 ga pump shotgun to provide some security and peace of mind. Wait for the insurance to pay off, then buy a better safe and try to...
Nice gun. In today's market I'd think it would be worth $650 - $750. The 29-2 was the last of the P&R 44 magnums, and the nickel guns are not all that common. OTOH, the 4" guns seem to be the most sought after.

My suggestion would be Spegel Boot Grips. They conceal very well thanks to the overall "rounded" shape, and provide great control while shooting. They look pretty good, too.
I just picked up a 431PD for $375, and I'm really glad that I did! I was amazed how accurate it is, I usually have to work at shooting J frames accurately, but this one just seems to hit right where it should. Now I'm bummed that S&W stopped making them :(
Interesting, they generally avoided using the competition's name, instead making up an alternative, like "32 Police Ctg".
IIRC, S&W did the same thing, not wanting to stamp COLT on a S&W gun.
Bill
My 1931 vintage Police Positive is also marked "32 Police Ctg"; it is the same as the 32 S&W Long (Colt couldn't bring themselves to stamp the letters "S&W" on a Colt gun!). 32 S&W Longs shoot fine in my old Colt. If your using Federal 32 S&W long ammo that might be the problem - I've had...
I gotta agree with that :D
Model 28-2
Model 57
Of course, some of those new fangled stainless steel N frames ain't so bad, either.....
Model 624
