    Anyone order from Brownells recently?

Order from Brownells occasionally, always good service. A few weeks ago I found they had a great deal on a rifle stock I needed. It made it to Anchorage right on time, already have it bedded and ready to start testing loads!

    Gun superstitions/phrases

Have you heard of the "Spray and Pray" shooting method? Maybe from trigger happy duck hunters using semiautos? Maybe from the often seen on TV gun battle when the shooters round count is many times higher than normal with little or no hits!

    Gun superstitions/phrases

"Keep your powder dry" I understand it to mean stay ready, especially in a tough spot. Likely originated from early woodsmen that hunted using flintlocks in bad weather, and needed to make the shot or go without food for a while. "Don't shoot 'till you see the whites of their eyes" ? Did...

    What's wrong with remington?

Lifelong Remington fan, and owner of many 700, a few model 7, 1 xp100R from the custom shop, several Marlin leverguns, and one "Marlington" levergun. To put it short and sweet, They just don't make 'em like they used too" Like so many companies being run by a board of directors interested in...

Is it worth it to hunt bear?

It would be pretty hard to pass on the chance to bag a Blackie, especially if they had been eating berries in the fall. We butchered one that was an early spring kill, from the looks of his green teeth, eating mainly grasses. Most of that bear was added into large batches of chili, or cooked...

Pro 2A vs. antis: "Compromise of the century"

Deep South writes: "I agree, but I'd also say it most likely isn't possible to solve the problem given the current division in the country. Their are two fundamentaly opposed ideologies. If their is a fix its many, many, decades away.......at best. To my knowledge no society has ever...

    1895 marlin stock correct fit?

There is an new unfired 1895G in my hands. As is the case with many factory made guns, the fit is less than perfect. The upper and lower tangs are pretty tight, no visible gap, stock slides onto them smoothly. My concern is at the front of the wood, where the small flats at the rear body of...

Need help choosing WWII USA milsurp

AK Float Pilot wrote: "I have a few WWII era US rifles, the one that rings my bell is my 1943 Smith Corona 1903-A3. Nothing says war time more than having a rifle made by a typewriter company." That brings back some memories. My first centerfire pistol was a GI 1911 made by...

    Stopping cylinder 'Ringing' ?

Earlier post mentioned the strong spring on some cylinder stop bolts. I've seen a very old Colt that had tiny holes appearing from the notch into the cylinder!:what:

Have you ever had any work done on a gun for your significant others gun?

Sweet tuning your sweetheart's pistol? At my house, there is no such thing as "new and improved" -at least according to my wife. Some time ago she went through the process of trying quite a lot of handguns to pick one for her camping gun. To my surprise, she choose a 1911. I was thrilled...

    New Smiths/lube

My experience was similar, the last one felt "gritty" in double action pull. I'm not enthused about disassembling a new revolver, but that one demanded some attention. I put some moly grease on just a couple of high friction points, light oil on every other moving part. After a couple hundred...

    I can't believe I got this lucky!

Great find, your persistence paid off, just not exactly as you thought! That is a beauty, no doubt the value will increase as well, they have been out of production for some time.

    Rem Core Lokts

Had an interesting experience with a Black Bear, 7mm Rem mag, and 175gr corelokt ammo. From an estimated 175yds, laying prone in a skiff drifting in a breeze, I pulled my first shot and the bullet went into the spine - but not through! That was a good sized bear, 6ft 2in nose to tail. The spine...

    Slow rust bluing

Great idea, but as the finish was getting finer, the pitting became more obvious. The pics don't really show it as much as the eye can see it. There is quite alot around the locking lugs and at the rear. Removing all of it would require some aggressive polishing , not willing to go that far...

    Slow rust bluing

Stripped the bolt, it and the magazine got cleaned up with 120 grit on the buffer, thinking of leaving the bolt unfinished. The mag. will get some rust blue.

    Slow rust bluing

The light from the camera's flash revealed a rusty color on the floor plate. Wondering if a finer grit final polish would eliminate that? That piece was my first use of the Brownell's Belgian rust blue. Others have recommended leaving the surface less than shiny- 220-320 max- to help the bluing...

    Slow rust bluing

The stock choices are so many for the '98. I've got a very plain black composite, equally plain Bishop walnut, and a couple of "GI" stocks that would fit to be able to shoot it. Boyds has a couple of laminated wood stocks that might look good, and add some weight to soften recoil. Best option...

    Slow rust bluing

Resurrection! Bringing this old thread back to life, and an old rifle as well. First two pics show the "good"- FN receiver, bolt turned down, scope base holes drilled and tapped. And then the "bad"-magazine beat on w/hammer or?, bolt shroud lock missing, safety lever shortened poorly, and...

    I'm tired of gun shows...

I love going to a couple of shows a year, at least. Too many guys seem to expect "flea market" deals when they go looking to buy. There are a lot more sellers trying to make a lot more profit than 20 years ago, but they are running a business of sorts, capitalism requires profit to be...
