What finish for Civil War cannon?

I have a copy of the 1860 manual on artillery upstairs some where. I can't recall the formula exactly, but it is in there. Probably not too easy to duplicate with modern day materials, at least on a home gunsmithing level. The advice given in above posts would be the easiest, of course.

Can Firearms be Fired in Space

Here is a fun little bit of Moon firearms trivia. You take your 16" naval gun, (like on the New Jersey), and I will fire my AR15 at the same angle, side by side. Guess which projectile goes the farthest on the Moon? Remember, those 16" guns would fire over 20 miles on Earth. No AR15 on...

So you want the best firearm lubricant?

I use what the designer and manufacturer recommended originally. It is a very effective lubricant, and it is naturally sustainable. It is sperm oil. Of course, I haven't been able to get it the last few decades. In that case I substitute some thing else. Usually CLP, but Dexron ATF...

    Handi Rifle in 45/70

I don't have a Handi-Rifle in .45/70, but I still feel qualified to comment since I do have one in .500 S&W Magnum. I am not going to argue over the 2 cartridges, I am just going to point out that if the SB2 frames safely handle the .500 mag, they will take the .45/70. Recoil can be rough...

    1911's Are Old...Outdated...Passé

I have never understood that "hard to disassemble" comment. They basically fall apart in seconds when you want them to. They usually stay assembled if you don't want them apart. Of course, I use the old school main spring guide and spring plug.

    Thoughts on painting precision rifles?

I can remember seeing gun magazine ads for an identical rifle. I can't remember the time period, but since I am 57, it was probably in the 60s. I don't know if any of the original users ever painted their M-Ns with that weird black paint. The cut down stock, recoil pad, and painted trim...

    Thoughts on painting precision rifles?

I don't think Bubba did that. I think it was the importer. I inherited the rifle from my brother, and to the best of my recollection, he traded for it about 1978. It had the recoil pad, and the stock was still shellac, with some black paint trim that was supposed to make it look better. The...

    Utility of a flash hider?

In dim or low light my Mini-14 would blind you before I mounted the flash hider on it. The folding stock made it much easier and shorter to transport. I did this in the late 80s, so it was legally an assault weapon from 1994 to 2004. It was not any more lethal than it was in its original...

    Thoughts on painting precision rifles?

If painting a rifle actually caused it to lose $200 in value, then I would be expected to have to pay some one to take this rifle off of my hands. Instead, I was actually offered $200 for it one day. Since I hate to take advantage of people, I turned him down. The base is spray on...

Proposed gun control bill in KY

It is not going to fly in Kentucky. But, it does show you that even in a great state like Kentucky, there are politicians who don't understand the 2nd amendment. We need to stay alert, both on the federal and on the state level.

Carbine Conversion Unit questions for 1911

I have had one for several years now. It works great! If you use good magazines, it is reliable. It is accurate, or as accurate as I think a pistol caliber carbine needs to be. Its appearance is not as good as its performance. The receiver is sheet metal. It works well, however...

What is more powerful? .38 or 9mm?

I find it hard to believe that no one has mentioned the .38/44 loadings of the .38 Special. Not in production currently, but lots of handload data to duplicate it. Some might consider it cheating, but it clearly beats the 9mm.:)

Printable Lowers and mags, does this make gun control obsolete?

Older technology, some of it centuries old, makes gun control unworkable. 3d printing is nice though. Sort of like a Star Trek replicator. It is receiving a lot of attention from Big Brother. Currently, in the US, it is legal to manufacture your own gun for your own personal use. I...

Is it unethical to allow a buyer to price your item in this time of high demand?

I am currently not selling anything. Not mags, rifles, or lower receivers. My choice. Now, if some one makes me an offer that I can't refuse, (it can be done, I promise you), I will take it. It seems to me that people who complain about "price gouging", (which really doesn't exist)...

    Sig P226 wonderful story

I bought my P226 in 1989. It was made in 1988, however. I still have it! One of the few things I have done right over the years.

What's is your favorite 38 Super powder?

I started out with Unique, about 30 years ago. At some point I started using Power Pistol. Last time I loaded any, I used Longshot. The Finnish VV powders have a lot of users, but I have no experience with them. Since I don't hot rod the .38 Super any longer, I am more than content with...

Did the US pay royalties to Mauser or didn't they?

First time I ever heard that story. I will have to dig out my copy of the Book of the Springfield. I don't have it handy right now, but as I remember it, it said that royalties were paid to Mauser for the M1903 rifle. These royalties ceased with the US entry into WWI. If some one can...

Shooting +P out of an LCR on a regular basis?

My LCR is stamped .38 +p right on the barrel. I do believe it will last a long, long time with +p loads. Eventually, any gun can be worn out. The LCR is also available as a .357 magnum. Same cylinder and barrel, but the frame is steel instead of aluminum. So the basic design is very...

    Old guns for CCW?

Though I haven't done it often, I have carried my Colt M1917 a time or two.

    M1 Carbine for home defense

Loaded with good expanding ammunition, the carbine is a good choice for that purpose. I recommend the 15 round magazines as being the most reliable. I have some that are still NIW, though they are probably over a decade older than I am.
