"I've tracked more deer shot with a 30-06 than all other calibers put together"
Then I guess the hunters who shot those deer have no business wearing orange right. Maybe only perfect people should be issued liscences. You know, the people who have never missed or made a marginal hit...
Don't you think you owe it to the deer to use a bigger cal.? Are you going to hit every deer from here on out right in the boiler room? Using .22 (.22, 22-250, .223) caliber bullets on deer is widely considered unethical. That's why it is illegal in many states. If you have to ask.... it...
Well guys, I finally decided on a rifle. And it's not one from my original 3. Let me tell you why I decided against them and which rifle I'm going to buy.
Tikka- I still love the Tikka T3. The action is as slick as anything I've ever handled, but I can't get past the plastic. If it were...
There are a lot of horse farms out in Fauquier Co. No one likes for there $50,000 horse to step in a ground hog hole. Just a suggestion. Anywhere you find horse people, you'll find groundhog haters.
No baiting in VA. from Sept. 1 through Jan. 3.
Ground hog hunting is the best practice I've ever found for deer hunting. There is no better way to practice shooting in hunting situations imo.
I use a .22mag. I like a little more range for groundhogs than the .22 lr can afford...
deerhunter61,
Thanks for the compliment. I've never had the buck scored. What would be your rough estimate?
Congrats on you trophy! They've got some monsters out your way huh?
Here they are. The wall hanger I got back in '97 with a 12 gauge. The one in the building is the largest buck that I've killed with my bow. Note the shot placement.... oh yeah right between the eyes. He was dead before he hit the ground. Interesting story, but probably not relevant.
deerhunter61,
I live in the Shenandoah valley. We're not known for producing world class whitetail here, but there are a few monsters killed every year. A 140 to 150 class deer is not outside the realm of possibility for any hunter here though. There are plenty of those killed out here...
Season Prep: Practice, practice, practice. Year round. I shoot my bow a lot. Not at a marked off distance either. In the woods. I have a buddy carry the target off to where ever and I shoot it from where I stand. No rangefinder. Great practice. Shoot from my tree stand too.
Scouting...
The doc is right. It's hard to say what the wounds found on deer are the result of barring physical evidence. i.e. broadheads, and bullets. Unless the animal is known by his rack or another physical feature.
It is amazing what these animals can live through in my experience though.
My hunting compatriots and I have killed many a whitetail with old war wounds. More deer survive than you might think. A few years ago I hit one "a little far back" and could never find it. A buddy of mine shot it in a corn field in late muzzleloader a month later. Healed up nicely.
And...
For the hypothetical trip I would take the 25-06, the 30-06, and the .338 win mag. They would all be Sakos, and they would all sport Schmidt & Benders. If you've got the money for this trip you could afford it. Harris bipod on the small gun. No bipods on the other two. Shooting sticks would...
So far scent blocker/scent lok clothing leads the race with 8 votes. Leopold, and cover scents/ attractants are tied for second with 4, and Browning rifles, Kimber rifles, and Remington all have three.
Rant on folks. Let it all out.
Just for fun. What in your opinion is the most overrated / overhyped / overpriced name brand in hunting gear. A few come to mind for me:
Matthews Bows
Leopold Scopes
Browning Rifles
Just my opinion.
Leopold is the Mathews of optics. Getting by on their name. They make great scopes just like Mathews makes great bows. Unfortunately they're overpriced because of their popularity. High demand = high prices. Economics 101.
You will get a great scope if you buy a leopold. You may get a...
