I own 2 DPMS LR 308s and 2 550s.
(some things are just better in pairs : ))
I have loaded many thousands of .308 rounds on my 550 without any any problems and have produced some superbly accurate ammo.
The LR308 has a 1in10 twist that prefers a heavier bullet. Neither of mine will shoot a 165gr...
So I'm confused...again...
If I have a MIM gun is it possible for the same gunsmith applying the same technique to make it as smooth as a forged gun w/o sacrificing structural integrity of any part???
I have a shelf full of books and supplements and obviously the internet is a good source but what I find myself turning to most ofter are the single caliber books by Loadbooks like this one.

They appear to be just a cheap...
I was shooting a Zero 158gr JHP over 4.5gr 231 in a .38 special case 2 days ago and getting an avg. of 770fps.
85 degrees and 115ft above sea level.
I don't think you'll get there with 5gr but 5.5 might using lead or a plated bullet. I think you'll be closer to 6gr.
I can tell you I was amazed...
For some milder working loads I use 11gr of Unique under a Hornady XTP for 1170fps out of my 4 inch 29 and 1230fps out of my 6 inch.
I'm also a big fan of Dardas LSWC over 10gr of Unique for mild shooting loads.
Hunting moves up to 20-21gr of 2400 under a 240gr bullet.
Sam,
Much thought, and speculation on this still doesn't give a clear answer.
Respect to Ted but I think I would like to hear from HQ on this one.
Would you allow a Para 1911 LDA shoot w/o engaging the thumb safety?
Doesn't sound like a good idea to me.
I was just shooting almost that exact load with wonderful results.
200gr Berrys SWC over 5.2gr WW231 at 1.20 OAL.
It was running right around 850fps on a 70degree day 100ft above sea level.
Your load sounds good. Check the extractor. Me thinks therein lies the problem.
I got a bunch of once fired s&b brass and can attest to the fact that it is a PITA to load. The primer pockets seem to be tighter than any others I have encountered. No the ones I got weren't crimped. Make sure the pocket is lined up with the primer and use slow steady pressure. If you hit that...
I have loaded a bunch of 231 and never had a problem on either of my 550s.
Get 2 so you don't have to switch from small to large primers : )
I did have trouble once with 2400 leaking a little with every round when I was trying to use the small powder bar to measure over 10 grains or so. What...
