Avoid Interordnance. Its best to look over an ak before buying. Look for canted sights, properly set rivets, and whether the trunnions are straight.
Heres a video on what to look for:

Receiver, barrels, fcg, and furniture for AKs are made in the US. However surplus parts and kits are still dirt cheap. Much cheaper than producing anything in the US.
Beretta didn't beat SIG and SIG didn't beat Beretta. The competition was pass or fail. Both guns met the minimum requirement and passed the tests. The adoption came down to pricing alone. The Beretta was more expensive than SIG but it's maintenance package was cheaper, which let Beretta undercut...
Again, the there was a double action variant of the Hi power called the HPDA submitted to the JSSAP trials. It was voluntarily withdrawn from the competition by FN. Presumably for reliability issues.
The Browning BDA was submitted to the JSSAP but was voluntarily withdrawn from the competition beforehand. Probably because of reliability issues.

I dont think the Tavor is marketed as an competitor to the AR15. Almost everyone I know that has a Tavor, Aug, FS2000, Scar, or ACR already has an AR15 or several. The whole point of buying a Tavor is because you want something different.
If people want to buy the cheapest possible of everything and are wedded to the idea that 600-700 ar15s are the ultimate in 5.56 rifles more power to them. There isn't anything cheap about guns and stretching your dollar is important for folks who have to worry about money.
However I'm not...
The AUG is a nice rifle. I would've had one if I didn't get my used Tavor for a very good price. I would've bought the nato stock so I could us AR mags.
Since IWI doesn't have a problem with selling every Tavor they make, I dont see the price going down much. The price will probably settle down to $1750 after everybody thats on a waiting list for a Tavor gets one. The dealer price is in the mid $1600s.
To those complaining about the price...
While I'll never take or recommend a class taught by Gabe Suarez himself, I do find his DVD and forum pretty informative regarding technique and equipment selection.
I don't jive with the whole Christian warrior stuff either.
Also look up Sonny Puzikas' Beyond the Firearm DVD. He was a Spetsnaz and his videos are informative if you want to learn how to run an AK effectively. Also look up Gabe Suarez, he's another big AK instructor. Search youtube.
This will help you: http://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=87485
Also check out Warrior talk forums, they're the go to for serious AK shooters.
Most of the AK gurus these days run their guns simple. Right now most guys set their guns up with a good sling and an ultimak gas tube rail with an...
If GIs coming back home with bring back Mausers and Arisakas dont feel bad about owning curio guns, than why do we? Weren't mausers made popular commercially because of GIs coming home?
