Can we talk about 1911 recoil springs ?

Spring designations for the 1911 are not the same as those of mechanical engineers. The poundage is the force it takes to compress the recoil spring to the length of full compression in the 1911. That dimension, iirc, is 1 5/8" or thereabouts. The design does not allow the coils to fully collapse...

What gun for NRA Conventional Bullseye??

99per cent of the bullseye people will use the 1911 platform. Many claim that the SA Range Officer is adequate to get you to Expert or maybe master. Other options are a used Bullseye pistol or one of the high end custom pistols. The other option and probably the most common is to buy a low end...

    Eye sight and shooting

Are you shooting right or left handed? Your vision (with which eye you are using)will need to be corrected so that the front sight is clear and in focus. ( both astigmatism and refraction) If you are shooting right handed with right dominate eye you should have no problem with both eyes open. If...

    Remington XR-100 A Good Rifle?

The rifle is a poor mans 40-X. It is built on a 700 action and IIRC has the solid receiver. There is nothing wrong with that. I think $990 is well over the new price when they were introduced. I am thinking I looked at a .308 and it was like $750 at the time.( 7-8 years ago) The .308 was never...

    Taggents and powder

To add another note, The taggants can be recovered after an explosion. With the taggants the powder can be traced to the supplier and on to the buyer. Taggants in gun powder was proved to be undoable by the manufacturers in smokeless powders back in the 1990's.. Since the taggants are of a...

Help with apprx age of this Colt Govt. 70

The sights were changed and of course the grips. I would not go as high as 900.00. I would think 7-800.00.

What can you tell me about this old Colt?

I have never seen a contract slide marked by Colt on the right side. I thought they simply had the part number. The frame is aftermarket or foreign. It is a pistol made from parts and may be a good shooter but would have no collector value and a value much less than an original firearm.

    Savage 99

The very early 99"s "bolt" was square on the rear. Later it was changed to a round bolt/lockup. The stock can split where the tang from the action fits back in it. The rifle was discontinued because of high manufacturing costs. That refers to high machining and assembly costs. Think old school...

    Lightweight AR Barrels

I suppose you know that 14.5" barrel requires a BATFE permit for a short barreled rifle (SBR). That costs $200.00 and a waiting period of who knows how long and getting worse. The 14.5" is functional but there is more muzzle flash.

Building a range; asking for your ideas please

If it is a private range you really do not have to worry about anything but stopping the bullet in the intended berm. The old rule of thumb to stop a 30-06 you need three feet of dirt. I would built multiple berms at whatever distance that most of your shooting will take place. Like a berm at...

    Problem with corrosive non-corrosive ammo

All civilian and military corrosive ammo in the United States was produced before 1955. If the Colt ammo was produced after that it was not corrosive. I doubt that the Tula was corrosive either, I know that their primers are not corrosive but I can not say about the ammo.

    Shooting Reloads For Self Defense.

As noted there are no court cases where a handloaded SD round made a difference in a criminal case. Mostly BS There have been a couple of cases where the prosecutor swayed a jury that the defendant used hollow point ammo and "hollow points" were mean evil rounds meant only to kill. The people...

    Remington R-1 1911 .45 ACP vs. Auto-Ordnance 1911 . 45 ACP WWII Parkerized Handgun

AO has been bought out by Kahr (IIRC). Quality might be better on those pistol than before but the old AO were very close to junk. Every problem imaginable. I would buy the Remington hands down over an old AO. I can not make that statement about the later AO because I have no direct experience.

Feds Seize Collectors Antique gun Collection, look for Something to Charge him With

It may be that the BATFE determined that he was "engaged in the Business". The article says he has a C&R license. With that license you can not "engage in the business". It is for you to collect relics. If he had a high volume of sales and it can be determined that he made profit he is probably...

The BATF Paid Me A Visit Yesterday

I reckon I may have myself into trouble. When they asked if it was full auto or semi-auto I would have said "Let's go out to the range and see if it goes full auto"

A million magazine march on Washington...Could it work?

We could all just show up to go to the Smithsonian on the same day. Walk around Washington to sight see. Of course the White House and the Capital are must sees. Like 2-3 million. We could all eat at Chick-Filet. We could all wear NRA gear but no central organization.

trying to get some values for my uncle

Marlin 1894 is not a pump it is a lever. It all depends on age and caliber. Reblue may actually take away from it's value. Most any 1894 would go for 300 to 350. It may be worth $1000.00 1897 Winchester should be able to get 250 to 400. Ruger Bearcat- $400.00 might be a little high but 350.00...
