Does anyone know of a source for a good compensator/muzzle break for .308 caliber rifles with a 1/2x28 thread pitch? My DSA carbine has the AR style bird cage flash hider on it, with a standard AR thread pitch, and .308 caliber compensators seem to come in a whole range of thread pitches except that one. I'd hoped AR-10s might use the same pitch, but standard on those appears to be 5/8x24. Metric or inch pattern FAL comps definitely won't fit, which leaves me wondering what is out there.

It was long ago decided to use 1/2"x28 on .223, and 5/8"x24 on .308.

This was done to prevent a .223 muzzle attachment ever getting put on a .30 caliber barrel by accident.

I think your only option will be to buy a .223 attachment, then have it drilled out for .30 caliber.

It would best be done on a lathe, and some brands are VERY hard, requiring some dang good drills & reamers.

Thanks -- getting a .223 comp modified was my plan B. Downside seems to be that a lot of the .223 caliber comps out there are not necessarily set up to deal with .308 recoil (fewer cut outs/baffles/etc.), besides having the smaller diameter issue.

Horsesoldier,

Check with DSA, they just added the following:

The 308 version of the DNTC Compensator for the FAL series rifles. This unit is 2.5" in length, .865" in diameter with 9/16x24 left hand.

Better yet give Primary Weapons/DNTC a call, they do alot of thread pitchs and might turn you the one you need:

Also Check with Vandenburg Custom. I have one of thier brakes on my FAL"

We offer our KA-1230 muzzlebrake in 1/2x28 thread. It is compact and cuts the muzzle flash also (its a hybrid design that operates as a muzzlebrake and flash suppressor). It comes with an A2 crush washer for installing the unit.

Another place to check out is JP Rifles. I have one of their "Tactical Compensators" on my DSA:

Stupid name, I know, but its incredibly effective. They charge $20 to bore out a 1/2x28 .223 brake to .308. Aparently they're designed to effective up to .338 or some such caliber, but they only mass-produce .223 ones in that thread pitch. Its very easy to install yourself with the provided crush washer.
