I am a little embarrassed to be posting a SHTF thread, but this movie we watched last night was the ultimate SHTF movie. It was called 10.5 and is about an earth quake so big that 1/3 of CA is about to slide into the ocean!! The plan is to stop it with large nuclear weapons. The acting is less then ideal, but the movie has some interesting twists.

The sad thing is if San Diego, LA, San Francisco dropped into the ocean I bet CA would get allot more conservative. The downside would be all of those people from CA would move into the surrounding states and try to make them more liberal.

What did everyone else think??

Yeah, the acting, the plot, and the timeline were all less than ideal.
Amazingly, this all occurs in one day:
Earthquake in Seattle during morning commute
A second major earthquake in northern California
Kim Delaney starts out in Seattle
FEMA head starts out in DC
FEMA head flies to WA, meets with Delaney
Delaney goes to northern CA
Delaney does a LOT of field research in northern CA
very soon after, Delaney is in LA
Delaney predicts quake in SF
major quake occurs in SF

As bad as the movie is, I'll watch the second half tonight, just because I hate watching the first half of something and quitting in the middle.

Vet that is pretty much the reason I am watching it tonight. I am planning on recording it on my VCR so that I can watch it minus all the comercials. I cannot believe how many comercials they jammed into that movie. The timeline was bugging me as well.

I had an economics professor back in College who explained what would happen to the world's economy if a major quake destroyed only LA.

Basically the ripple effect through the worlds economy would end up pushing the entire world into a depression that made the '30s look like a time of milk and honey.

The global instability caused by the major economic collapse would probably cause large scale war (especially in Europe and Asia, but it would end up on our shores too).

So based on the damage done to the west coast in the made for TV movie, we'd be looking at a SERIOUS global SHTF.

I always wondered if the insurance companies would pay for somethign like that. If LA slid into the Pacific would you be able to claim you house and land as a total loss??? I think our country would be in some serious trouble finacially if this ever happened.

I watched the movie too, and while an interesting theory, CA will never sink into the Pacific as a result of an earthquake. At the worst, LA and San Fran will be closer neighbors and part of Mexico will be annexed to the U.S.;) The only way Arizona will have beach front property is if the Poles start to melt. :uhoh:

while I was watching that show last night I was thinking "huumm....do I have enough ammo and/or components to make it through" If it was to happen in my area.

I may need to visit my local reloading supply shop:D

I guess I don't watch enough TV, I didn't even know it was on. It was playing last night? Boy, am I out of the loop or what?

I tuned in for a while, but the commercials were intrussive; I will wait to see it when it eventually gets released on DVD.
