This was in our local paper today. Just so happens the girl's father, John Creek, is a friend of mine, as is the gunsmith who built her rifle, Bruce Artus.

Caylyn Creek has her eyes focused on something many girls her age have no idea of and little interest about: a target - sitting 1,000 yards away.

Through the scope of a $5,000, high-precision rifle, Caylyn, 10, who wears glasses to read in her Goodnight Elementary fourth-grade class, recently became the youngest shooter to participate in a National Bench Rest Shooters Association-sanctioned event.

Most excellent!

A kid with that sort of concentration at such a young age will go far.

Since she lives in Colorado, she ought to check out the junior program run at the Olympic Training Center.

It's all smallbore stuff, but the opportunity to train for the Olympic teams might be something she'd be interested in, at least on the side.

USA Shooting is the national governing body for the Olympic shooting sports, and worth a look.

If need be I can give you the contact info for the guy who heads up the junior program there.
 
:) Wonder where she practices. I go to Rampart but need a longer range.Anyone know where the range is in Pueblo?

There is a range in Canon City where they hold 1000 yard matches. That's where John Creek and Bruce Artus shoot, so I assume she shoots there also. I've never been there, but I can get directions for you.

Justin, I'll ask John if she would be interested in that.

...but what rifle is accurate out to 1000 yards and can be handled by a 10 year old? the father says it "roughly a .25 calibre bullet", so i'm thinking, maybe, .243 win?

In benchrest shooting, the bench handles the rifle. If things are set up right and the shooter has some experience, even bigger bores are practical. My sister used to shoot 3 position with 06 when she weighed about 75-80 lbs. Shooting prone, she had to have someone stand on her feet to keep her on the pad. :D
