My buddy bought himself a Glock 20C and said, "Hey can we reload for this?" I tell him, sure we can, we just need some brass. The guy I normally get brass from doesn't have any 10mm processed but he says that he has some once fired out of an MP5 that we could use if we wanted. Great price and we just culled out the brass that was cracked or heavily marked from the fluted barrel.

Now, we get to the part where I ask him, "How strong do you want these loads to be?" The response, "What is the maximum amount I can cram in there?" After a quick discussion about unsupported barrels and reloading a caliber I have never done before, he is undettered. So I said, "Your gun, your call."

The result? Case head blow-out. It pinches your hand a little and also throws the extractor plunger out towards the target. Easy to fix and less that $4 per incident if you can find the extractor. Pictures are, of course, attached.

The blowouts (two of them because my buddy just had to prove to himself that it was the brass and not the load) occured within 7 shots of starting a heavy load string. Note they are the Federal brass in the picture

So, two extractor plungers later, a KKM fully supported barrel, a Colt Delta Elite, a 3-1/2 lb. trigger, steel guiderod, and Starline brass we have the following results. (Yes, he got it fixed at the gun show and had money to burn :rolleyes: )

1.260"OAL, WLP, Starline, 78°C, Sunny, no wind, 9 foot to chrono, 180GR MGB JHP
* Powder (load/max):Average, Extreme Spread, SD

Colt Delta Elite
* WSF (6.9/7.1gr): 1064.8, 33.9, 12.8
* 231 XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Glock 20C w/ KKM barrel
* WSF (6.9/7.1gr): 1079.8, 24.9, 8.21
* 231 XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Glock 20C w/ Factory ported barrel
* WSF (6.9/7.1gr): 1027.83, 29.1, 9.63
* 231 XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

It is worth noting that after shooting several hundred rounds of the original loads, which were close to max AA9, TiteGroup, and PowerPistol, through the KKM barrel, not a single one had the violent failure seen with the factory barrel. It is worth noting that a few, maybe 3 or 4 showed hairline cracks right at the extractor groove and each time you could feel the gas escaping when firing the gun. It really does feel like you've been pinched and there is a small sootprint on your hand. However, the casehead does not blow-out.

They were 180GR Remington FP on the rounds that came apart. For those, they were all Federal brass.

The Bullet in the loads I chronoed were MGB 180gr JHP . I've updated it to read properly :)

The Delta chamer is worse that the Glock, so we didnt shoot a single questionable round through it.

Could someone please tell my why Glocks have so many problems with reloads. :confused: I thought the point of a gun was to get the pointy thing going really fast while not letting the burning stuff get out the back. :neener: Seems like glocks have a problem with the second part.

So what was the exact load you were using when you experienced these failure? Because I get higher velocities out of 220 gr. LTCs using 800X in my Witness with no ill effects. If you want "hot loads" out of the 10mm you've got to use the right powder, and 231 ain't it. 800X will do amazing things in 10mm. So my reaction is that at these velocities your problems have a lot more to do with powder choice than unsupported chambers.

Are those velocities listed above?

If those are velocities they are kinda pathetic.

800X
AA7
BlueDot
PowerPistol

THere are some others that are also more ideal.

Pathetic is right.

I am getting darn near those velocities with my 4.5 inch barreled CZ75 in 40 S&W.

Use Power Pistol, Longshot or 800X. Use the right powder and you should get over 1200 fps easy with a 180 grain pill.

There many problems with Federal brass in Glock .40 a while back, seemed all were FED cases mkd. "FC". The present ones are all mkd. "FEDERAL" and seem to be v. much stronger/better, FWIW...

Thanx for the Photo's!

The point of reloading isn't to see how fast you can shove a bullet down the barrel, it is to tailor loads to what you desire. I loaded rounds of various powder charges in AA#5, AA#7, AA#9, 231, WSF, Titegroup, Power Pistol, BlueDot, and Bullseye. After shooting all of those, he decided that he liked the feel and the economy of the 231. In addition, he wanted something that would not stress the expensive new brass as much until he got his Bar-Sto barrel compensated and promotion after his 6 month training (i.e. money bump). I simply made the loads that he wanted for his pistol at this point in time.

The load that blew up brass was an AA#9 at XXXX gr (which I should have posted at the start), but only one person asked me that. I didn't get one over the chrono since he was shooting them for feel before we spent time clocking them. If you don't like the velocities, then remember these as loads that just aren't good enough for you. I didn't ask for advice on powder selection nor did I ask for opinions on if the loads were hot enough. I simply thought it would be interesting to post the results of what happened with his G20C and the data for the loads that he settled on. Nothing more, nothing less.

AA9 popped that brass?

I was loading something like XXXX gr behind a 180 (Starline brass and not in a Glock).

Why can't you load for velocity? I do it all the time.

atblis: I tell you what, I'll scrounge up a few of the remaining federal cases that might not have been shot up, reload them with your recipe, hand you the Glock with the factory barrel, let you pull the trigger on it, and enjoy the results. It hurts when that gas vents out onto your hand.

It is amazing that the only thing people here seem to comment on is, wow that velocity is this/that/ or the other. Only a few people mention how the load felt, how economical it was, how well it filled the case, how the recoil affected their gun, and if they enjoyed shooting it. I've saved posts from Clark with ridiculous loads, loaded similiar (I'm not as brave) rounds, and have enjoyed spitting fireballs out the end of my guns. I keep those loads on hand for late night shoots or "show and tell" because they are fun. However, I'm not going to go to the range and practice with a 16 grain load. It is uneconomical and not at all interesting to me.

I'm glad that velocity is the thing that you load for, that is fantastic, but don't forget that like a car, there are more things in it than just a gas pedal. :)

Reloading = Tailored Rounds for the situation at hand

There's a reason I don't own any Glocks.

You seem to have found out why.

I load for velocity (pressure), than back down till I get the accuracy I want. Works great.

In the case of the 10mm, why bother shooting it unless the're loaded hot? If I want a plinking round, I'll just use a 40SW.

This thread is a just a bit over the top.

It has some good information, though, and I will leave it open, BUT I'm redacting some of the heavier loads posted without warnings or cautionary statements. Once again, I direct the attention of all posters to the Sticky at the head of Handloading & Reloading forum, entitled, "REQUIRED READ for those posting Extra Heavy Load Information" It is located at - -
http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=27444

If you can't give published sources for hot loads, you must comply with the procedures in that sticky thread. If you want to rearrange the components of YOUR firearms, okay, but you must warn others before you post the over-spec loads. The rules are there for all to read.

Thanks for your cooperation.
