#11 percussion caps?

hi everyone. believe it or not, i just fired my rem 1858 made by pietta yesterday for the first time after buying it 17 yrs ago!! anyway, bought #11 percussion caps from academy sports in CCI brand, BUT they are very loose on each nipple. they fire nicely, but i can't see how these old timers kept these caps on their guns while ranching, riding horse, etc. QUESTION - what is the best percussion cap out there with a nice fit for my 1858? brand and where do i buy it? THANKS!!!!!!!!

i dont know if brand will make a difference if its loose then its loose. all the brands should be loose. if not then there is a problem as manufactures are not making them uniformed to each other. Your problem is the wrong cap. i would try a number 10. a number 10 cap is smaller than a # 11. Also some people pinch the cap just a hair. This makes them a little tighter when they are on the nipples. Now the main problem to all of this is the italians. The nipples they put on the guns are not standard so to speak. This makes it hard to get the correct nipples or properly fitting nipples. For my Uberti im going to be ordering new nipples. of course mine is a WALKER

A CCI No. 10 is not the same size as a Remington No. 10, or are their No. 11's the same size. And RSW uses the size no. 1075, whatever that means. And I've found some huge variations in size between different batches of Remington No. 10's - still not sure I can believe my measurements on those.

Plus, the manufacturer's buy whatever nipples their suppliers have, so what may have fit a Pietta 1851 Army 5 years ago may not fit that same model from Pietta today.

One solution is to replace the nipples with a known size, Tresos for No. 11 caps for instance, and then find some caps that fit that nipple and stick with it.

I use Remington #11 caps on my Pietta '58. Pinch 'em a bit and your good to go.

In a perfect world the Italians would talk to each other and insist that their nipple suppliers get standardized.

I own 3 piettas and all use # 10 primers. I use remmington # 10,s. I have also used # 11,s and pinched them tight with no problems

Have the pair of ’58 Piettas. The older of the two (built circa ’92), came to me NIB and takes Remington #11’s, quite well. While, it’s “twin” seems to prefer CCI #10’s. Just works out that way, for some reason.

Guess that shouldn’t surprise, though. The handgrips aren’t even interchangeable, between the two. Go figure.

Remington #10 does it for me real nice, along with 30 grains of Triple Seven [3fff] setting behind a .451 swaged round lead ball with a little Crisco smeared over the front of the chambers....

thanks, gents. i did hear the remington caps fit better than cci. i guess i'll have to experiment along with everyone else. while i thoroughly enjoyed loading and shooting this 1858, i must say i thought it would be cheaper to shoot than SOME of my modern weapons.
