120 Grain Loads for 25-06

Just looking for some advice on some 120 gr sierra H P . loads for a newly found 25-06 . Has a New Hart Bbl. Thanks..

never used that specific bullet but re19 and 4831sc are never a bad choise with the 2506

Of course every barrel has it's preferences; but that is generally an excellent bullet for any big-game hunting with the .25'06. It's my accuracy check bullet for the .257Roberts and .257Wby. If a .257Roberts won't shoot that bullet and 41.5gr of IMR4350, or 44.0gr IMR4831 into tiny groups, it just ain't gonna shoot......

The current "darling" powder for the .25'06 is Reloader 25. I've seen velocities as fast as 3,200fps posted, though I only get 3,200fps from my .257wby with it. Secondly IMR7828. H1000 as well as both H and IMR4831.

For accuracy, add IMR4350, and a "dark horse" at lower velocities is IMR4320. A friend has for many years relied on 42.0gr of IMR4320 under the 120gr Sierra GameKing from his .25'06. Velocity is only about 2,800fps but his Interarms MkX "Viscount" Mauser will shoot three shot one-hole groups with it.

This bullet at 3,000fps performs essentailly the same as a .270 with a 130gr bullet. The only thing wrong with this bullet is that the ballistic coefficient is a bit low. Also try the Berger 115gr VLD. B.C. is somewhat higher, otherwise accuracy is just as good.
Personnaly, I prefer the Sierra 117gr BTSpt.

Hart will make you a barrel with any twist rate you ask for, within reason.

You might ought to check your rifling twist with a cleaning rod if the barrel isn't marked.
A 1/10 will easily handle a 120 of any kind.
A 1/12 should, but maybe not a Plastic-Tip Boat-Tail.

A lot of 25-06's have been put together over the years with slow twist barrels and light varmint bullets in mind.

I shot a few of those 120 HP way back...

IMR 7828 ... 54 grs Max
IMR 4831 ... 53 grs Max
IMR 4350 ... 52 grs Max

I just stick with the Sierra 117 gr BT for a little better B.C. ... use the same loads... kills deer.

I haven't shot the 120 gr bullets for years as I use my 06 for varmint huning. Back when I did shoot 120 gr IMR4350, H4831 and IMR4831 were the powders. I've changed since then and like RL now. I use RL19 with the 85 to 90 gr bullets. I'd probably use RL22 for the heavy stuff.

Bought my first 25-06 in 1965 and have fired hundreds of rounds over the years. My current load is a 120 grain Speer hot core with 49 grains of IMR 4831. Have used the 120 grain Sierra with the same load. 25-06 accuracy is only limited by the quality of scope that you use because you have to see it before you can hit it. A quality 25-06 with a good trigger is a pleasure to shoot. BW
