12ga magnum buckshot? magnum slugs?

Here is Remington's full lineup of Express Magnum Buckshot, I shot the 2 3/4 magnum round, it's a kicker, since I keep some on hand, helps me sleep easier

2 3/4 inch 12 pellet loads are my favorite HD round, but I ran out and no where around here sells them any more. Now I'm stuck deciding between 2 3/4 inch 9 pellet and 3 inch 15 pellet.

My local GM has a glut of 15 pellet 3" 00 right now. From firing off a few of 'em in my Mossy 500 with a 6-position stock (5.5lb gun, loaded weight), I will say that the recoil is stout. The first shot is not fun, the second shot is VERY not fun. I didn't want to try shooting the third shot.

With a limb-saver they are actually OK. Recoil is stout, but manageable. I had no problems firing off a full 7-shot mag of 3" magnums with a limb-saver pad on the stock. If you weigh the stock down with some steel BB to get your gun to about 7lbs or so, recoil is comparable/less than Federal #8 birdshot, I found.

If your gun is already 7lbs, I think 15 pellet 3" magnum 12ga is highly manageable, albeit it is stout.

Good grief. I've never shot a 3.5", 12 ga. There was no such thing back in the day when I was seriously deer hunting, but I never killed but one deer with 2 3/4" Buckshot loads. Every other one was with 3" buck, Remington Number one specifically. I can't say I ever noticed the recoil when hunting, and although they kicked a bit when patterning them, it was certainly nothing to run away and hide from.

This was using an old Sears/Mossberg pump gun that I thought was pretty light. Lighter than an 870 anyway.
