Not far from me a 13 year old boy was shot 7 times this week by Santa Rosa Co. Sheriff's deputies. According to reports the boy was returning home from playing with friends with pellet guns. He was carrying an air-soft AK47. Sheriff's Deputies pulled up behind the youth. They stepped out of their vehicle, took cover behind the doors of the cruiser, drew their weapons and called to the boy to put down the gun. He turned toward them and as he turned one of the Deputies saw the muzzle turn in his direction and he fired. Hitting the youth 7 times. The handcuffed the boy as he lay on the ground. He died shortly thereafter.

One witness (who saw the boy moments before the police arrived and warned the boy about carrying the toy down the street) says the officer fired quickly, seconds after they arrived he said, as the boy turned towards them. A second witness claimed the officer walked toward the boy shooting as he lay on the ground. These are preliminary reports and should be viewed cautiously.

The boys classmates walked out of school yesterday in protest of the shooting and there was a walkout from the middle schools and high schools of possibly a few thousand students today in Santa Rosa in protest.
