I picked up another lower at a gunshow this past weekend, a Bushmaster with M4 stock. My thought is to buy a 16" upper and have a short piece for HD that's more comfortable for the wife than a 12ga and more effective than her pistol. Does anyone make a 15" barrel with a permenantly attached flash suppressor? I want to keep it as short as possible without having to SBR it and blow $200. The 11 1/2" with 5 1/2" attachments don't do anything for me. Am I better off just getting the more common 16" and living with the 17" total length?

yes, for two reasons:

a) it's simpler and easier and more barrels to choose from
b) a perm-attached fs will be worth a lot less in the event of a future AWB

Nobody makes a 15" with permanently attached device, though many people do make a 14.5" and CMMG makes a 14.7" with permanently attached device.

I am not a big fan of them because you need a gunsmith (or better mechanical skills than I have) if you want to work on them. If you do go that route, make sure you get any parts (rail system, free float, gas blocks, front sight etc.) that you want ordered with the upper so you don't have that problem.
