Hello friends!

Well I've been thinking about this one. Does anyone make a 16 gauge shotgun in a tactical format? If not, what would be the best pump action 16 gauge to make a tactical build off of? There are some nice 16 gauge buckshot loads out there with purple hulls, and it would seem just really cool and different. It's just a "to be different" kind of fun project I am thinking about.

Please tell me what you think. Thanks all!

I don't think there are any current make 16's in tactical format.

But were you to pick a 16 ga from new production I'd suggest the BPS or 870 wingmaster.

I'd likely pick something different, though. For slide action I'd choose a beater wingmaster. More likely, though, I'd choose something like an 11-48 or model 11 in 16 gauge. Or an 1100.

I've been knocking this idea around myself!
I have a pair of 1920's vintage mdl 12, both in 16 gauge.
I've thought about taking one of them and cutting it back to 18", and attach a flashlight and/or a red dot.
They're actions are buttery yet solid, and they're both reliable as a hammer.

My thinking stems from the fact that my petite little lady isn't too keen on 12 gauges.

I wouldn't do it just because of availability and selection of ammo. To me, if its not stocked at Wal Mart, its not easily available.

Yep... I've been on the lookout for some 20 gage buckshot for about six months. Finally, and just now, found some on the shelves at wal mart. Didn't see any 16 gage and I'm pretty sure there are no currently made HD pumps or SAs to speak of.
A better option might be cutting the barrels on an old 16 gage SxS or use low recoil 12 gage buck in an HD gun. Personally, I like my 20 just because ammo is so easy to come by.;)

Have you ever heard of a thing caled "the internet"?

They have plenty of 20 gauge buckshot loads, and 16 buckshot loads, for sale.

Look, I'm not doing this for practical reasons. I'm not doing this because ammo is easy to find. I'm doing it just to have something different, to be the only kid on the block with a defensive 16 gauge shotgun. You dig?

The 870 16 gauge was built on the 12 gauge receiver, so 12 GA stocks and forearms will fit. The magazine caps are the same, so a 12 GA mag extension should also fit. I think watching the pawn shops and auction sites for a beat up 16 GA 870 that needs a rebuild / refinish and building it into the tac gun you want is your best bet.

I"d go with a Winchester Model 12. There are lots of plain barrel, full choke beaters still available. They are scaled to gauge. Which makes them feel and handle more like a 20. Unlike the 870, which is nothing more than a 12 with a slightly smaller barrel on it. Buy one and customize away!

Why not see if AIP Tactical can build you an 870 configured how you want it?
