I recently picked up a 700 CDL Limited in 17 Fireball for my Dad's 60th birthday coming later this year.
I have never reloaded anything smaller than a Hornet, anything to watch out for in the 17s? Should I crimp the loads??
Does anyone have a load they would share? Can I use Lil Gun or H4227 under a 25gr V-max ? I think the Fireball uses a hotter primer. I have Rem BR 7 1/2, thoughts?
I am getting this rifle dialed in and will give it to pops on an upcoming squirrel shoot in June. He very well may wet his pants, and not from old age!!
Any Fireball fans on the forum??
Thanks in advance.

Should I crimp the loads??
No!
Not just No, Heck NO!!

Rem 7 1/2 primers are perfect.

Powder choices would be slower then either Lil' Gun, or H-4227.

Hodgdon website will give you the powders most suitable.

Looks like H-335, Benchmark, and H-322 would be best for highest velocity.

Lyman #49 says X-Terminator is possibly most accurate.

I load the 17 Remington and the only trouble with it is putting the itty bitty bullet on top of the case.

As I also load 221 Remington Fireball, I would not expect any other issues with the 17 Remington Fireball since the cases are similar. No problems like the super thin walled Hornet cases.

Besides the powders listed above, Hornady has data for Accurate 2230 and W748.

And, I would not bother crimping.

I will give the Ram Shot a try. I have used the X-Terminator and I really like the way it meters in the powder thrower, seems to be a pretty good propellant.
Thanks for the correction on crimping. I will not!!
