Pietta 1862 Police Snubnose .36 Caliber Revolver

Anyone have one of these? I've had one for a few months now and I like it. I am wondering if other Pietta 1851 and 1861 navy barrells are interchangable with the little 3" barrell it came with? For that matter would the cylinders and grips be interchangable as well

I have one and LOVE it. FYI, it's actually an 1861 frame, not an 1862.

I was considering that gun. Haven't completely decided, but I'm leaning for the 5.5" barreled Remington at Cabela's.

I emailed Pietta on more than one occasion.

Someone answering as actually Alessandro Pietta told me that they design all the parts to be interchangable. I had specifically asked about the 51 .44 cal Buntline. NO steel framed versions are sold in the US. So I asked him about putting the barrel on a steel framed 51 and that was his response. He said I wouldn't have a problem, and I haven't.

He said specifically not to use his barrels with Uberti guns.

The 51 and 61 frames are essentially the same. So yes, those barrels should work as long as they are Piettas.

Here's a C&P of one of his messages to me:

Alessandro is the one who ramrodded the move to total new machinery in the Pietta factory in I believe 2000, and when he was here in the US for a SHOT show he vowed to bring the Quality up. So far I believe him. I think he is VP of Pietta.

Dont ya just LOVE these little snubbies? Got a brace of both, the .36 and the 1860 Army models.

They draw more attention at tha range than the Walkers or Dragoons! Have bought about 10,000 dollars worth of cap&ball revolvers in last year, aint got NO problem with Pietta quality, been runnin pretty much par with Uberti.

I don't have on of those snubbys, just the 44 in the pic below. These are CVA (ASM) parts. The hammer over runs...
I have been eyeballing those brass ball stuffers, but haven't found a loose one yet.

Dragoon! I really like my Piettas actually. But for the most part, I have gotten rid of my brass framed stuff except for this CVA thingee and I think one more brass miscellaneous frame. Oh yea.. kept one Pietta 51 model in 44 that's brass but sold all the others on Fleabay.

My Pietta Colt 1860 snubby is one of my favorites!

FYI: A perfect, period-correct holster for these is a replica of the "frog" that the US Navy used during the Civil War. Here is my snubby, with replica frog/holster.

Wow! Good response. Thanks guys its good to hear that everyone is happy with this little pistol. It's even better to hear that the barrels are interchangeable, many pistols in one. All my pistols are Piettas and I'm happy with each and every one.

Maybe was the Dixie catalog, but I remember seeing a ram gadget, you put your cylinder in it, put powder in all six, set a ball atop all six, and it had six rams at once and good leverage to seat 'em home. Looked kinda neat.

Any of you guys with these snubbies ever cronograph them? I was wondering what sort of muzzle velocity you'd get with the short barrel.

Hi Dave!

Yup! Bought two new chronos recently and gotta use em! Tape from tha Oehler not handy, with tha 1860 army, five grains of 3F behind 28 grains of H777, vegetable fiber wad and lube wad with round ball was crackin 975fps.

Still workin when i can for an optimal load for if it had ta be used fer real, tha take it easy on tha gun load is 30 grains 3F Swiss, Veg/Card/Lube/Round ball and knocks out around 820fps on average.

Nope, trick was tha loadin of black powder under tha 777 for ignition&quick burn. Oversize ball with lots of grip and pull on tha chamber walls helps a bunch! Gets more pressure behind it before its gone.

Yep, I'm in Brooklyn now. we'll live here a couple of years and make some money then we'll look for someplace with a little elbow room.
