I just got my 1903A3 from CMP last week. It was in amazingly good shape. The barrel looks great as well as the stamped detail on the metal parts. It looks really good. Anyway I took it to the range and sighted it in at 100 yards than shot it at the 200 and adjusted. The accuracy is fantastic. I am so pleased. Initially reading CMP's disclaimer and all about no rifling etc I was not sure what I was going to get. This was my first purchase with CMP and they did a good job on getting me a quality rifle. I just figured they would not really send out a piece of junk. Maybe I was to trusting but they did good... I do have a question that I hope someone can answer. I have read a few threads and some have mention a 2 groove barrel. How can you tell what you have and why is it good. Oh - I sent my paper work in for my rifle and got it in 2 weeks. Again CMP did really good for me.

Oh, one more question. how do you adjust the elevation?

The rear sight has a slide adjustment for elevation. You should have received a small book from the CMP with the rifle, don't remember if it covers sight changes.

From what I've seen of the 1903s they had on the floor in the South Store, quality was all over the place, but there were definitely some very good condition examples in there alongside the rougher stuff.

Thanks for the info on the elevation. I saw that on the side with a small screw. I will try that. Has a large front site with an "A" on it. I like it. Does anyone know what they mean by "2 groove barrel". Would sure be interested to know.

Look through your bore and count the lands or grooves. The two groove barrels have two lands and two grooves, 4 groove barrels have four lands/grooves.

You won't find any difference in accuracy between the two.

Regards,
hps

DONT TRY TO ADJUST YOUR SIGHT FOR ELEVATION WITH THE SCREW ON THE SIDE!!!! The elevation is adjusted by slideing the rear peep sight up or down the adjuster. NO SCREWS!!!! just slide it up or down with your finger and thumb.
