If he wants a Colt and is set on a Colt he should be able to get a newer Colt Series 80 gun in the $!,000 range you mention or an older lightly used Colt Series 70 gun. The Series 70 Gold Cup guns seem to be running out at around $1,500 and the standard government flavors right around $1,000. I like and collect the Colt MK IV Series 70 guns and basic Blue are running about a grand or less, the gold cups run around $1,500. Anymore, there is no shortage of manufacturers making 1911 type guns, many of which are quite good to excellent. However, if the kid wants a Colt I would get him a Colt.
