1911 Conversion

I'm currently wanting an autopistol to use on deer. From what's been suggested within my price range ($500), I've basicly settled on a 10mm in either a Glock 20 or 10xx Smith. But what about a 1911 converted to 10mm or even a .460 Rowland? I don't mind a bit of tinkering and I can load my own ammo.

I could purchase a Rock Island or similar budget 1911 and later convert it to another caliber as funds allow. What exactly is needed to convert a 1911 to 10mm and how much will it run? Is the Rowland powerful enough for deer at 50 to perhaps 75 yards? I noticed the velocities were quite high with 230gr bullets.

I would like a 10mm of some form, but it would be nice to hear what you guys have to say on the issue and use of the Rowland.

You can do a search for converting 45 ACP 1911's to 10mm. What you will find is that it is not worth the money and it may not feed correctly. The feedramp in the 45 ACP frames are usually cut deeper and steeper into the frame than the 9mm/38Super/10mm frames.

Converting a 1911 to 45 Super or 460 Rowland can be done, but I don't know if I would trust a Rock Island/ Armcor/ Charles Daly or any other really cheap 1911 for that conversion. Most of these conversions are on Colt, Kimber or Springfield frames and slides. A well made cast frame would probably stand up to the beating, but a cast slide like some cheap 1911's?

I've looked into it. Too much hassle to change a .45 over to 10mm IMO. You wont save any money.

The easiest conversion I've heard about was getting one in .40 and having the chamber reamed to 10mm, and changing the recoil spring. The Para P16-40s have 20lb springs, and IIRC the Delta Elite is 23 lbs.

Why do you need it to be 10mm? 0.45 ACP is a pretty impressive round in and of itself.

Zach S: Armscor makes a 1911 in .40S&W (regular and hicap models), would that be a prime candidate for the rechambering of the barrel?

The RIAs are suitable for the .460 conversion. This is straight from clarks custom. Seems to be a very impressive cartridge to me.

RooK: I dunno. I dont have any experiance with Armscor, at all. Its not a brand I hear a lot about either, so I cant even use one of my "Well, I've heard [this] or [that]..." lines here.

I think you would be better off buying a Dan Wesson or Kimber factory made in 10mm than converting a 45 if your dead set on a 1911. The price of a pistol + conversion will probably exceed the 700-1000 your would spend on the DW or Kimber.
