Whenever I unload my 1911 (for cleaning purposes) I notice that the ejected round is "marred" on the face of the bullet and on the rim on the case. It's like the bullet has been lightly "chipped" and the rim has been scratched. Any idea what may be causing this and how it may be fixed. I've never experienced anything like this on any other 1911 (or other pistol for that matter).

Some background: The pistol is Springfield's "Loaded" model. I purchased it new 6 months ago. Between 500-1000 rounds have been fired through it. No problem with jamming. It shoots fine. It eats and spits fine. Feedramp is polished from factory (according to Springfield literature). Extractor has not been "messed" with. Both the barrel and extractor are stock and have not been smithed.

I've tried to include pics showing the "marks" on the bullet and scars on the case rim.

Thanks for the info!

Appears the transition area from the frame feed ramp, to the barrel has an edge that is marking the bullet. The extractor is marking the rim.

Springfield probably could have done a better job, but both areas should smooth out after more rounds.

Good Luck...

I'm hoping Tuner will chime in, but, here's my 2 cents.

First, unfortunately, your pics are a little too blurry for my old eyes to interpret the exact issue.

Second, you have described 2 separate and distinct problems in your subject line. They can be either inclusive or exclusive of each other. So you need to try to decide if the issue you have having is one or the other, or both.

My suggestion:
- Lock slide to the rear, no magazine inserted
- Insure weapon is safe and unloaded
- Load magazine with either 1 live OR 1 dummy round, with no marks on case or bullet
- Release slide and let round ride into the chamber as in normal operation.
- Now, invert weapon, holding in a safe direction and over a pillow, ease the slide back and lock.
- If the round doesn't eject off the extractor, entice it to do so with your finger.
- Examine the round, does it display any of the characteristics you described?
- If so, then you need to look very carefully at the surfaces in contact with the round during feeding.
- If no markings are evident, then the issue is in the extraction/ejection of the live round.
- I can't recall the exact configuration of the Loaded model, but if it live round dinging is occurring during ejection, I would say the bullet is contacting the forward edge of the ejection port.

During reliability work, nearly all pistol 'smiths file a bullet relief area in the forward portion of the ejection port to eliminate bullet interference with the ejection port when a live round is for what ever reason removed from the chamber.

Hope this helps.
