I have long wanted a 1911 and recently bought a Colt Govt. model Mk 4 Series 70. The serial no. puts it in a Colt production run of 42 981 pistols in 1980.
It is fitted with Pachmayr grips.

It is in excellent condition and, according to the previous owner, hasn't been fired for about 17 years. Once I cleared the spider webs and dust out of the barrel, it seems to have had very little use.

I think I have made a very good buy indeed and intend to use it mainly for IDPA competition. There are two things I would value comment on:

1. The Pachmayr "billboard" obscures much of the grooved racking grip
on the left side. Also the Pachmayr built-in plunger tube means it
has to be removed for re-assembly after a field-strip.

2.The trigger pull is fairly heavy, as can be expected in a service weapon.

I am not planning to alter anything, but rather to adjust myself to the pistol.
Advice and comment will be much appreciated.

I'd lighten the trigger to something a little more 'crisper', probably something in the 4-5lb range. Safe for carry and still improved for IDPA.

If you can re-assemble the plunger tube & springs, then you are capable of adding an adjustable trigger.
