1911? Worth it?

All these guys have good points! If I only bought guns because of need I would have had to quit buying years ago! And get rid of most of what I've got! It is not a matter of need it is a matter of want! Something to think about , I bought a Russian SKS 20 years age for 79 dollars , made in 1951 never used still packed in grease! Do you think it was a reasonable investment[emoji3]

When I shot my first 1911, I didn't care about the history and legend of the piece. I had owned several semiauto handguns prior to shooting any 1911-style one. After the first magazine downrange, the heavens opened and angels sang.

I still don't give a darn about its history or legend. It is not too heavy. It is not meant to be a bullet hose with small bullets. It is the best handgun type or style I've ever used and until my doggone arthritis finally puts the kibosh to it, I'm carrying and using one in the correct caliber.

You may not have the same epiphany as I did, but I'll bet your experience with the 1911-style pistol will be a happy one. If legions of people didn't like them, not every Tom, Dick, and Harry would be building the darn things from the Philippines to Turkey!

The feel, the history, the experience. That should be enough.

They're just a ton of fun to shoot.

Cooldill, your post brought a smile to my face. For years, many years, I stayed away from the 1911. My thinking, it is an old design, and the ammo cost way more compared to other available rounds. A while back I got into reloading and really enjoy doing so. This open my mind to others cals, including the 45acp. A long story short, I picked up a Rock Island 1911. I now know what the love is all about. The RIA 1911 is a well built pistol. I've put 1,000's of flawless rounds through it and it seems to be getting better.

If you try it you will be hooked. I know I am.

I just like the design. My first 1911 was in 10MM. Why? Because I select guns based upon caliber. I wanted a 10MM and thought what a great way to get into this caliber. Well now I have more than one 1911 and yes also in 45 ACP. It is a fantastic design, reliable, and fun to shoot. They will be with me to the end. I guess my girls will have to fight over them.

They are what I shoot best. Other makes and models will come and go but I'll never be without at least one 1911 (and one Glock 19).

No one has to own a 1911 any more than they have to own any other handgun. However, there a definite reasons that the design has endured and been in continuous military use since it's inception and after 100+ years is more popular in civilian circles than ever. For those reasons alone it's worth at least trying one out at the range.

For those that choose to carry 1911s over one of the many polymer offerings, the decision is driven by more than capacity and weight. I prefer the ergonomics, the trigger, and the 'shootability' of the design - they point naturally and have a fit/feel in the hand that has yet to be replicated in polymer - and the 1911 trigger is the one that all other pistols are measured by. Additionally, they're nearly infinitely customizable, so, if you choose to, you can have one made to fit your needs/specifications.

While I've owned/shot/carried/been issued pistols and revolvers of many different types from many different manufacturers, my preference after almost 45 years of shooting handguns is the 1911. I have no need or reason to switch to something else. However, as much as I like them, I won't push my choice on someone else, other than to say give one a try and see what you think.
