I'm in the market for a 1911 but don't wont to drop a grand on one. I was looking at the Academyand they have the taurus PT 1911 for 529 and the Para GI Expert for 549. I have owned tow 1911 in the past on was a ser 80 Colt Gold Cup (loved it) I could hit eny thing I tryed to and the other was a Para High cap in 40 (loved it too). Both of these gun had target sights but neather one of these do. I like target sights . But enyway has eny one tryed eather one of these pistol? And what are your thoughts on them. Or another good pistol in the 1911 style.

If I were looking for a lower cost 1911, I'd have a real hard time not getting a Ruger SR1911. On the Paras, make sure you get a stainless as the Parakote finish does not hold up that well. As for Taurus, they would not be my fist choice and that's all I'm going to say on that.

If you like target sights consider the Springfield Range Officer. It is a little more, in the $750 range, but it's still well under $1K.

If you end up going for the para. Buds gun shop has it for $469 including shipping.

I have heard good things about RIAs. Check Centerfire systems for prices on them.

STI is a great maker. Probably one of the best in the mid price range. Couldn't go wrong with the Ruger either. May have to wait a bit for that one though. They are pretty scarce right now. What is your price point? Is the max 550.00?

I have the Para GI Expert, I paid $550, just like your dealer is asking.

I like it. One of the great things about 1911s is that you can get a good basic model for $500-600; you don't HAVE to spend $3k on it.

I think it is the best finished 1911 for under $600. It has a powdercoat finish that is far superior to parkerizing used on all of this gun's competition in its price range. It comes with 2 stainless mags, has easy-to-see sights, and a stainless barrel.

I replaced the hard plastic grips with Hogue finger groove grips, which has made it much more comfortable to me. I may upgrade the sights to adjustable at some point; we'll see.

Like many (most?) 1911s, it won't feed anything but round nosed ammo. I haven't tried round profile jacketed hollow points yet, but I bet it will feed them OK. It

I'd buy it again, for sure.

Don't want to spend a grand...
I just checked Gunbroker, searched "Colt Government New", there were new 3 Colts for $899.00 and one for $849.00

I urge you to research MIM (metal injection molding) prior to purchase.
IMO less is better.
At the under $1,000 range Colt has the least (I'm pretty sure).
I would also think it (Colt) would hold it's value better than others.

In my opinion there is something wrong with any production level 1911 that cannot handle rounds other than round nose. There is no reason a solid 1911 should not function as reliably as any modern pistol.

RIAs are awesome and well under 1K usually under 500 I love my RIAs great shooters but they dont even compare to a colt

I owned a 1911 once.

It was a great gun.

But, I don't recommend that anyone buy a 1911 based on price. In my opinion, you are buying trouble.

Save up and buy a new Kimber.

Every one I've ever had, from a wartime Remington Rand to an Argentine M1927, to my current carry gun, a Kimber Classic (MK 1) all shot semi-wadcutters, hollowpoints and everything else I fed them.

Between the Taurus and the Para, I would take the Taurus. Forged frame, slide, and barrel. I'm sure there have been Taurus 1911's that were duds, based on the internet reports. I've had close to a dozen, and haven't had any problems that weren't caused by the previous owner. A complete disassemble, cleaning, and reassemble corrected both of them. For the sake of full disclosure, I bought all of them, cheap, with the intention of shooting them for a while, then reselling them at a profit and looking for another Colt. My main problem with the Taurus is the same as it is with Series 80 Colts - the Series 80 parts. You don't have a problem with them, so, no problem. Good luck

Another vote for the SA Range Officer. The past few months Patrick Sweeney and Mas Ayoob, among others, have written rave reviews on the RO.

Plus I own one, so what am I supposed to say..........

As others have stated, price really can't be much of a consideration when buying a 1911. The good ones are well over a grand, the really good ones are over 2k. This is not to say that all inexpensive 1911's are bad. That would be inaccurate. I just unceremoniously dumped my $900.00 1911 for a used HK USP and am happy. It depends what your purpose is. I don't have the luxury of having "range" guns and "carry" guns. I wouldn't buy a gun I wouldn't carry. And since you are concerned with price, you might want to look at it like that.

Some day when I am not paying for tuition and diapers and BMX and whatever else, I'll get a Brown or something. Until then, I'm not dealing with the headaches of cheap 1911's.
