People I ask suggest Kimber, Colt's, Dan Wesson's,Smith and Wessons etc..but can you get a good to go 1911 for less than $1000 these days?

Looking for 1911 owners who have experience with Springfields, Para's, Taurus', or any other 1911's that fall below the grand mark.

Thanks for your time and effort.

Brian

I only have experience with Kimbers, Taurus and Springfields...I'd say the best deal for your money would be the Taurus PT1911...But If I were you, I'd buy a Kimber Custom II series (Preferably a Stainless II or a Custom/Custom Target II). The Kimber Custom II is at the top of my wishlist right now...With an M1 Garand chambered in .30-06 at a close second :)

I have only ever owned Para Ordinances and have been more than pleased. One was a high capacity which I would advise against. Too fat. All of mine have been Commander length as that is my preference and one was an LDA trigger which is more of a personal preference thing that I could do fine with whether I had it on my gun or not. All functioned flawlessly and as far as Im concerned Kimber doesnt exist as long as Para does.

I have a lot of good 1911s and won't drop more than $500 on one.

OTOH, I only buy used problem guns.

Every 1911 is a problem waiting to happen. Learn how to fix the problems and there are a ton of good guns available cheap.

The real problem is that, of the ones you mention, only the DW and the Kimber are worth tuning...

Sure but it depends what you want it for. A Springer Mil-spec (not the GI) is a fine all around 1911 with decent sights and a flared & lowered ejection port. I've had a number of Armscor (Philippine made) 1911s and they are good quality as well.

For a range/fun gun, there are lots of reasonable options. If you go used, there are even more. My new Colt Commander was less than $700 as well...

You can get a Colt for under $1k easily. The last Stainless Commander I bought cost me $750 NIB. Get the original. Quality is great.

I use a wilson, however, if you are looking to get into 1911s you might try the para. I have heard good things about them and have read great reviews also. I also saw them (guns and ammo maybe) to a torture test of it. There were no malfunctions or problems as they put 1000 rounds of .45 acp through it. I think they run about $500 dollars. Anything below that price point is junk anyway.

My Smith & Wesson is a great 1911 for under 1000. After about 1000 rounds, not a single failure. It's highly accurate too.

I own Colt and have owned Springfield. I have shot Kimber quite often.

No suprise I am going to recommend Colt. For under 1K I would look at the 70 series reproduction, well under 1K.

Fewer MIM parts than most sub 1K guns. American made and the orginal. Better resale value. The new ones are an excellent product with great customer support if you need it. They also have a Custom Shop if you decide you need work done at a later date.

i have the springer champion operator. costs around $900-$950. it has been great, extremely accurate and feeds anything i put in it :)

this would be a great buy for ya :D

if you want very high quality for even cheaper, the parausa gi expert is awesome quality for $550.

You have to define good... "Good" is a relative term.

What do you want out of the gun? Carry? Range toy? Etc... Once you define what you mean by "good" then people can give you better advice IMHO.

Kimber Custom II with night sights 900 bucks new, Springfield Loaded with night sights 850 new. Both are good guns. I own both.

You can get any number of good 1911 pistols for under $1000.00

COLT Combat Elite $989.00 out the door.

COLT Commander $730.00 out the door.

Both were bought from the same dealer here in VA. The Commander was bought in Dec of last year and the Combate Elite in April of this year. Colt has few other models that fit under 1K. The new 70 Series, any of the 1991 80 Sereis base guns and all of the XSE line althou some of the XSE's (like my CE) will bump 1K mark out the door with taxes depending on the shop's mark up.

Additionally I see Dan Wesson's for around $980-$990, but tax may push the out the door price slightly over.
Kimber has a few models in the $700ish range.
Springfield Armory "Loaded models" cost about $800-$850 around here. The Springer Mil-Spec cost about $600-650. The Springer GI a bit below that.
Rock Island/Metro Arms/Hi Standard and other Armscor clones run about $400-$500.
I know the Taurus's are priced under 1K but I've never even bothered to give them a second glance so I don't know their price. Same with the newer Para's.

Of those listed, I've owned a number of COLT, a number of Springer's , (1)Kimber Tactical Pro II and (1) Para Ordance P16/40 in the past. I had bad luck with the Kimber and the Para (neither company could make either gun run correctly after numerouse trips back for service/repair, I finally got tired of fooling w/them and sold them).... one of my Springers had to go back to correct a failure to extract problem. They fixed it on the first try and the service dept was easy to deal with. My COLT Combat Elite recently had to go back to COLT for a recall on the safety lever (althou it was working perfectly) - works like it did when I sent it off and the service dept was quick and easy to deal with. This is just my personal experience. Others may vary.
