Hello,

I have an old, larger caliber target rifle I was told was built for a shooting competition in 1934 in Leipzig, Germany. I'm trying to find out more information about this competition and perhaps the manufacture of this gun.

There is a sheild=shaped plate on the bottom of the stock that reads "1934 20 DEUTSCHES BUNDESSCHIESSEN LEIPZIG."

Engraved in gold lettering on top of the octagonal barrel is "I. ANSORG, WURZBURG". Engraved on a barrel face below that is simply "STAHL."

Thank you for any information you can provide.

Found this on a German ? wiki page. Google translation is a little lacking. Leipzig 1934 - 20 Deutsches Bundesschießen German Federal Shooting

It will take pictures.

The inscription might be where the rifle was shot first (or last, from some of Riss' find) or where it was awarded as a prize.
Herr Ansorg in Wurzburg might be the shooter, the dealer, or the maker.
The barrel is made out of steel.

The action type, the stock style, and the caliber - which might be discerned from the proof marks - are what really count.

Paraphrasing the above wiki article and DSB website;
Bundesschiessen refers to the 23 national matches held by the German Shooting Federation (Deutsche Schutzenbund or DSB) between 1862 and 1965. The 20th match took place in Leipzig from July 6 to July 15 of 1934, and consisted of 1800 shooters from three countries, competing on 175 lanes.

It was not a success, as the traditional shooting events from the late 1800s, their associated rituals and regulations were viewed by the Nazis as hard to understand and therefore suspicious. This was to be the last pre-war Bundesschiessen, as the Nazis did not regard it as conducive to military marksmanship (the only type of marksmanship they were interested in) and disbanded the matches and the DSB itself in 1938.
