200 yard "Any rifle, any sight" is getting to be very popular around my neck of the woods .While I have the iron sight catagory covered I'd like to get a scoped rifle and was wondering what would be the best bang for the buck in a 200 yard rig. Since you get 20 minutes to shoot 20 rounds any action would work. Any suggestions?

My favorite pick for 200 to 300 yards is an AR-15 with a Trijicon ACOG 3x mounted on it. It has a very clear sight picture, no batteries needed, and works for long and short range. They are a little spendy but are worth every penny.

Generally, bolt actions are not preferred due to the speed of the lockup, but the quality and consistancy of the lockup.

With an AR-15, you'll be going up against purpose built rifles.

Having said that, a good AR will do you proud. Mine is good for 3/4MOA or better. I've seen some gauranteed for 1/2MOA.

my choice would depend on what target is being shot & if the gun might be used in the future for 600+ yard matches.
if its only going to be used for 200 yard matches i would pick up a used rem 700 or savage .223 preferably with a bull barrel or a new rifle if you can't find a suitable used rifle as a starting point. add whatever scope you prefer do a little bedding & trigger work then start shoting.
if it was going to be used on targets with a black bull on white paper or possible 600+ yard matches i would step up to a 6mm or 6.5 caliber. i also like to use older redfield 3200 24x scopes but they are getting hard to find.
