if gas is under $10/gal next year, I may try to make that.

When do you think you'll have the date set for '09?

taliv,

We're going to take a little break and start thinking about '09 in a couple months. I would expect it almost the same weekend next year-- it is chosen this way due to weather and the amount of daylight.

thanks

cool. you guys have some water at various points around the course to refil camelbaks?

being somewhat acclimated to "tha deep south" where humidity is normally 100%, I imagine I would have to carry more than my weight in water to make it through the desert in 100* weather.

Here's the first video to come out of the match footage

taliv,

It's pretty much the shooter's responsibility to carry enough water. We usually stash some unannounced "emergency supplies" out in the field, however.

.260 Rem seems to be popular...
Interesting that no one was using the .338 LM

Wonder what the .260 shooters are using in terms of recepies...

Not legal. 300 Win mag was the biggest caliber allowed.

338 Lapua is hard on steel even at extended ranges.

I didnt get to go to the match, but at least I didnt go to Iraq. I guess its a wash.

Well, it turns out that 338LM isn't that much harder on the target plates themselves (AR500 armor plate), but it is more likely to damage the mounting systems and/or jostle/move some of the A-frame target stands that we used. There is a trade-off between target stand sturdiness/durability vs. how easy it is to transport the target stands and cost. Since virtually all the targets had to be moved in preparation for the match, super-sturdy stands and placements couldn't be used. I do prefer to allow 338LM when possible, but going into this match, we didn't know exactly what type of steel targets we had and how good the stands were.

Knowing the shooters at this match, I think there would have been either zero or only one 338LM shooters had we allowed it. The guy I have in mind has a 308 and a 338LM, and the 338LM would have been an advantage. However, the majority of these guys are shooting moderate 6.5mm cartridges-- if they wanted maximum ballistic advantage, they'd be shooting a hotter round.

I do know, roughly, what the 260 recipes were from data gathered in the survey. The majority of the 260 shooters used R-P brass, with formed Win or Lapua brass following. The two powders used by the 260 shooters (and I include 260 Ackley in there too) were H4350 and H4831SC. Primers were mixed. The most popular bullet was the 142 SMK followed by the 139gr Scenar and the 144gr.

Justin,

For rifles in those calibers, I guess you could look at the "Part I" article. In the various 6.5mm and .338 articles, I list comparative ballistics, but not everything against everything at once.

Here's a table of full-house loads in various LR calibers, sorted best to worst by wind drift @ 1000 yards.

I think the average competitor age was about 45-46, oldest was early 70's.

OK, too bad I'm not in physical condition equal to the average 45 year old. And didn't shoot Savages. I used to drive thru Logan about once a week in the winter, on the way to Northern NM.

(AR500 armor plate)

Last I spoke with Wheeler at Whittington in May, most all of his steel past 600 yards was not AR-500. That may have changed.

Did you guys use any of the ABC zone targets I cut for you? If so, how did they hold up?

On the KD range, there is a bunch of soft steel; however, we found virtually no target damage (besides cracking on interior corners) on the field courses.

Man, been wanting to go to this match for several years. My partner Ernie Bishop and i will be going next year--with our XP-100 handguns-- 6.5 WSM, and a 7mm Dakota. Can't wait!!
