22-250 Bullet and Twist

It is made for a 55 gr flatbase spitzer. Might shoot a 60 gr flatbase, mine will handle some, not others. Actually, once the odds and ends are gone, mine will go on a straight diet of 52 gr SMK which is its most accurate bullet.

Building on Jim's comment, a range of 40 grains to around 55 would work best. The 40s slow down awful fast, though. I, too, prefer 52-grain boat-tail bullets, although I happen to use Sierras, mostly.

I've had the best results with 50gr and 55gr boat tails, but did not see any "issues" with some 62gr Nosler Partitions I loaded once. Not quite as accurate, but no tumbling.

I've got a Howa that will shoot 36gr Varmint Grenades through the same hole.

In general though, up to 55gr is preferred.

Ditto what the others said.

My .22-250 (Remington m700ADL) shoots ragged hole's with 50-55gr Sierra's, or Hornady's w/flat base and no-cannulure.
However, the 55gr Hornady v-max shoot 1,5-2" and the 60gr won't hit the paper at 100yds (unless it's 6ftx6ft). If they do "show up", it's a full Key-hole.

Midways 50gr DogTowns shoot to ~5/8" as do Remington PHP's.
Some Hornady 55gr PtSP's w/cannulure's shoot about 1.5", but do so out of several .223's I've tried them through with 1/12 to 1/8" twist. (bad lot of bullets).

Several aquaintainces have used the 40gr bullets for pararie dog shooting, but have gravitated back to the 50's because of better trajectories and wind resistance beyond 300yds.

The 63 grain Sierra SMP Varmint bullet is the upper limit.
It works well in most 22-250's I have shot it in for coyote hunting.
It is a semi-pointed sptizer, so is shorter for weight then most 60 gr spitzers, and will stabilize in 1/14 barrels.

So to answer your question, 45 to 63 grain bullets of the proper design will work in your rifle.

Generally though, the 50, 52, 55 grain range is the sweet spot in a 1/14 22-250.

My Ruger will not shoot anything heavier than 50 grains. Makes finding bullets problematic. I wish Remington and Ruger would offer 1 in 12's. It would give you a wider range of bullets to choose from. Savage understands rifling and offers a 1 in 12.
Follow Art and Jim's advice.
Bergers are hard to beat.

My Remington varmint gun will make a hole of .172 diameter at 100 yds.
5 shot group. Using sierra 52gr. HPBT. Measured with a toolmakers microscope.

My CZ-550 has that twist, and like most 1:14's the 52/53 gr. hollowpoints generally shoot best. Anything over 55 grs in my gun wont stabilize for ****. Tried some 60 gr. Nosler Partitions, and they grouped about 4 inches. 55 gr. Remington PSP's shoot about an inch at 100 yards, while 52 gr. Shilen Microjackets shoot under .5"

Viking, you are back on the 22-250? or you're getting multiple guns? You still planning on this for a coyote rifle? That 550 Varmint Laminated is just shy of 11 lbs...unloaded and without a scope. Thats a lot of gun to carry around. If you are set on a bull barrel, consider the Kevlar model, it shaves off a full pound. The American is only 8 pounds, but no bull barrel.

The reason I went this way was a guy had one for sale, like new, not a mark on it for a lot less than it is worth. Was selling to pay for his 6.5 swede fs. It was bought worth the money, if I don't like it, I won't keep it.

The 250 wasn't my first choice, but for the price, I couldn't turn it down.

Not planning on carrying it to far. Around here, you drive along the top of the hills and look down both sides.:)

That sounds good then, I didn't realize you bought it already. A great price on a next to new rifle can offset the weight IMO. ;) Out here though we hike...a lot.

So your saying that a Ø.224 projectile will only make a hole Ø.172. That's impressive.

I'm guessing you were trying to say that the center to center distance was .172 across. Meaning you could put 5 inside a Ø.396 ring, good group...
