Hi everyone,
I am new to this forum and could use some expert advice.
I am going to start working up a load for dog hunt'in in June .
I have a 22-250, Hornady, 55gr. V-max bullets, H380 powder
And going to try magnum LR primers.
Going to start at .010 off the lands.
Any advice for this load?
Thanks,
Sucho

I am no expert. Varget shoots better for me. H380 may have temperature related pressure spikes. I have ruined more primer pockets with H380 than i care to admit, and they were 2 grains under max.

Welcome to thehighroad!

I use Hornady 55 gr, I have also some moly-coated ones, they are messy, but I will use them until they run out. I load them over 38 grains of H380. My first batch, with my plastic rest and my shaky hands, I was under 1" @ 100 yards. With results like that, I feel no need to either push it faster or use a magnum primer. I haven't measured the chamber, I don't remember what OAL I used, and I don't have it in front of me, whatever was published.

No need for magnum primers, but they don't hurt either. Speer/ATK uses them in all their data in Speer manuals.
I'd start at recommended start loads however. My .22-250 tops out at 39.0gr with bullets at 2.350" (saami max oal). It is also more accurate with this much jump (go figure?) With Sierra, Speer, or Nosler bullets it a solid 0.5moa rifle and 2 out of 5 groups will be 1-hole if no wind. Velocities are up there too. 3,700+fps at 39.0gr.

I also like Reloader15 in this rifle. It's "ambivalent" with IMR4064 and Varget. Not "bad", as 3/4-7/8" 5-shot groups aren't "bad" but aren't what this rifle will do.

My loads are with either Winchester Large Rifle or Federal 210, preferably 210M (match) primers. However, if I was hunting a cold climate, I'd probably switch to Reloader15 and possibly even a magnum primer if shooting when temps are below 0degF.

you dont mention the rifle you are using but 34.5gr of varget, 52 gr amax bullet federal 210m primer in my rem 700 with a 26in barrel 1 in 14 twist holds one hole group at 100yds. i did replace the trigger (shock with a rem) with a timney adjusted to 2 lbs and a nikon 3 x9 scope

The rifle

The rifle I am using is a 22-250 Browning A-bolt with a Boss on it.
Thank you for your reply.

your combo should work fine...I don't use the mag primers but as long as you start at the starting load somewhere around 36gr you should be good to go. I hav always had good luck with H380 in my 22-250 guns and suspect you will too. Seating bullets close to lands and the use of mag primer might keep you from reaching the true velocity potential but its still a good combination...

What does anyone think about Bench Rest Primers?
I don't think they are necessary mostly because they are an added expense for no reason. Shooting dogs isn't all that hard and it's for sure not critical so I would not spend the money on BR primers.

CCI-200 $29.99
CCI-250 $32.99
CCI #34 $41.99
CCI-BR2 $52.99
