hello. i have a hoyo 22-250. i am trying
to get it more accurate. i am loading fmj 55 grain bullits with h-380 powder 38 grains. i am seating bullits at 2.540 using a vmax bullits. that is .010 off my lands. does anyone have this gun and if so what are you using for loads. thanks bob

Did you try the starting load and working up to 38 grains? When I do my load development, I start at the min load and load up 5 of each load in .3 gr increments. When I find the best load, I then load 5 rounds in 1gr increments up and down and do the same.

Welcome to THR, hoyo.

Usually, FMJ bullets are not as accurate as V-Max or soft points and hollow points. That's just the way it is.
As Brian Williams noted, it is proper procedure to work up loads from a recommended start load in your manual or at the load sites online.
www.hodgdon.com shows 38gr of H-380 as the start load for a 55gr Speer SP. Standard lead core bullets of many brands can use the same start load, as long as it weighs 55gr.

Your most accurate load will be somewhere between minimum and maximum listed charges. If you are inexperienced in reloading, try to avoid maximum loads until you gain experience.

I shoot Hornady A-Max 52gr match bullets in my own 22-250, and they are very accurate.

Your COAL appears too long at 2.540". You need to have around 1 caliber of bullet in the case for proper tension on the bullet. That means that the bullet should be in the case neck around .220 and whatever the COAL remains is the dimension. The Hodgdon site lists 2.350" for the COAL.
Measure a factory 55gr if you have one, and see what they use for COAL.

I was shooting Sierra 52 HPBT's in a gusty 15 to 20 mph cross with with 37.6 grns of 380 and I was shooting 1.25" 50 shot groups at 100 yrds. It was darn accurate but I know I can tweak it more.

I've been going to try 380,even bought a jug,but just haven't gotten around to it. Using Varget my most accurate loads were on the lower side of the load data...and that makes me:)

Mine's a 22-250,also.

I shoot the 50 gr Hornady SP with H414. This combination has worked well in 3 different 22-250 rifles over the years. I got by reading Ken Waters' Pet Loads many moons ago. It shoots so well, that there wasn't much reason to continue load development.

Regarding the barrel twist. I don't know. 1 in 9 comes to mind but I was not planning on shooting heavies so I am happy with it. I was planning on 50 to 52 HPBT's when I bought it.

I'm confused. Are you using FMJ or V-max bullets? V-max bullets are polymer tipped.

Anyway, my 22-250 likes 40 gr. V-max's w/38.0 gr H380. For heavier bullets, it likes hotter loads--55 gr Speer TNT HP's w/40.0 gr H380. But, as others have said, you'll need to try different loads in your rifle to find the best for it.

hello again. i posted last night about my 22-250 loads. i will get it straight. i am loading 38 grains of h-380. i am using a 55 grain fmjbt bullit. i am seating them at 2.450 to 2.460. trying to get accuracy. if i use a 52 grain a max than i seat at 2.540 which is .010 off my lands. my groups are 2 inches at 100 yrds. i can"t seem to get them any closer. i am shooting off a led sled witha 8 to 24 variable scope. any help would be appreciated. thanks bob

I load H414 and a 50 grn V-max. Rifle is a heavy barreled Tikka. 5 shots make a hole about 30 cal in size at 100 yds if I do my part. Standard twist in a 22-250 is 1 in 14. My Tikka don't like ANTYHING over 50 grns.
