Hello,

I'm looking for a book on .22 rifles that provides a bit of history, but primarly diagrams of their actions. I'm looking for a fairly basic book that covers what I would call "American" rifles (Savage, marlin, Remington) and Store brands (J.C. Higgins, Coast to Coast, etc).

Any recommendations or maybe recommendations for a couple-few books that would cover all of this?

Thanks.

I don't know of any book that deals specifically with 22 rifles or handguns which contains much in the way of specific gun or company history or diagrams. There is a Gun Digest book that is stictly diagrams or schematics of guns. There is one web site that contains many of the manufacture's booklets that came with many guns. (If I find it, I'll insert the link later.)

Books on 22 Rimfire. My favorite is "The Gun Digest Book of the .22 Rimfire" by John Lachuk published in 1973. It is available periodically on ebay. Excellent book on 22's.

A more recent book "The Gun Digest Book of .22 Rimfire Rifles, Pistols, Ammunition" by James E. House (published in 2005) is fairly good. It is also commonly found on ebay in the $10-$20 range. Not a bad book although the author's writing style is a bit dry and boring for me.

Some information can be gleemed from the Blue Book of Gun Values.

Old Gun Digests and Shooters Bibles will have some information. They were produced yearly and are commonly for sale on ebay.

There were also "rimfire annuals" produced back in the 70's and 80's that have some information. These are in magazine format and were commonly sold on the newstand. Very difficult to find these days.

There are books on the major manufactures, but not on 22's specifically.

A lot of information about specific rifles or 22 fireams can be obtained at the Rimfirecentral forum. Check it out.

Hope this helps.

The Complete Book Of The .22 A Guide To The Worlds Most Popular Guns by Wayne Zwoll,Copyright 2004. The Lyons Press. ---This may not anser all of you question but its a start.

Thanks for all the advice. I've found the John Lachuk book online and was wondering if you could give me a bit more information about it. What it contains as far as information and about what types/brands of rifles.

Thanks for the help so far.

Lachuk's book-Table of Contents

Ch 1: The .22-Everyone's Gun
Ch 2: Choosing Rimfires for Recreation
Ch 3: Iron Sights vs Glass Sights
Ch 4: Practical Plinking
Ch. 5: Trail Guns and Trail Leather
Ch. 6: Smallbore Sruvival Potential
Ch 7: Fair Game
Ch. 8: Get the Range/Outwit the Wind
Ch. 9: Serious Shooting Games
Ch. 10: State of the Art Ammo
Ch. 11: Accuracy Versus Cost
Ch. 12: Rimfire Reducers
Ch. 13: .22 Training for Tots
Ch. 14: Simple Self-Smithing Your 22
Ch. 15: Centerfire Smallbores
Ch. 16: Rifle and Pistol Preservation

No Schematics. Does not deal with no-name 22 such as JC Higgins, Ted Williams, etc. Remember these no-name guns were generally produced by Mossberg, High Standard, Marlin, and a few by the major manufactures. In most cases, the "name" manufacture will have an almost identical rifle offered with just slight differences like stock checkering or something similar.

Usually not very expensive on ebay. So it is not like you are buying the book rather than making your car payment.

Book is greared toward shooting the 22 mostly.

There is a reference book on dissassembly

and reassembly of rimfire rifles. I don't know the title or author but I see it at gun shows. The title is something like "Disassembly of Rimfire rifles." Then it gives specific directions for many popular models of mostly .22 rifles. That should satisfy your needs to a great extent. Also, go to the website for Numrich Gun Parts and they have lots of schmatics you could simply print if you wish.

Thank You

I think I've found all the books listed on ebay or Amazon.

MoeWadle, The book you talk about I found on amazon for under $20 dollars. I'll add some of these to my christmas wish list and if I don't get them then I'll just buy them my self.

22-rimfire, That's a good point about them really being just name brand rifles under another label.

Also, thanks for pointing out Numrich gun parts, I've ordered from them before but never looked at their online schmatics.
