I'm thinking about a new rifle. Something that is easy and inexpensive to purchase and shoot, easy to reload and good for varmit. This isn't a dedicated varmit gun, but I would mind trying to call up some yotes. I'm thinking a Savage FP10. I have a Leupold 3X9 I can put on it. What do you guys think? The 30-06AI amd 45/70 get a little rough on the shoulder while punching paper.

Thanks,
tjg

.223 is an excellent varmint cartridge. It's all I use for varmints these days.
It won't reach out quite as far as a 22-250 or 220 Swift, but it's much more economical to shoot.

.223 chambering definately fits the requirements especially if you don't reload at this time.
Savage makes a good rifle, but if your open to suggestions I absolutely love my Remington Model 700 VSS in .223 Rem.
Take Care

Got to love those NEF single shots. Have a heavy barrel .223 that is just about as accurate as my Ruger M77 Mark II 22-250 at 200 yards for which I paid three times as much. Picked up a NEF in .243 this past fall that is not to shabby either.

I'd consider other brands, but the Savage's price is so low. I have a Rem700BDL that I had rebarreled with a heavy stainless 30-06AI and a Ruger #1 in 45/70. The 223 will be a "plinker plus". I'd thought about a 22mag or 17hrm but they very limited.

Get the Bushmaster varmint version of the AR-15. It's just as accurate as the bolt guns and when you get a little extra money, you can get a 16 inch carbine upper for it, and have the best of both worlds.

I have been really impressed with the accuracy of all the CZ rifles I have seen. They are also chambering one in 7.62x39 which should be interesting. The cartridge should be pretty accurate, especially if using quality ammo. They also make one for .223

If you asked a 1000 people who really know their stuff:
Rem 700 is #1.
Savage is #2 and a lot cheaper.

(I'm not counting custom stuff)

.223 would likely be your best choice for short and mid range because it is the most common, cheap, versatile, most widely supported.

The Rem700 VSSF may be your best choice & one I want. However, it is very pricey.
Another choice would be a well used Rem700 & buy a custom quality barrel.
Another is to visit some of the for sale lists and buy a used Rem700 that has been highly customized & accurized for a tad less than the VSSF. If you want web links to this last idea, email me. This last choice is what a lot of varmint / benchrest guys recommend.

If you want to reload & do the old gun / new barrel, there is .223AI for a tad more power. I think there are new WSSM in .22 cal just comming out, but that would kill a lot of the good things about .223. ie, cheap, common, etc. I want to find out if you can have a 223AI made and shoot store bought ammo in it to fireform without any risk. That way, you could shoot storebought all the time and then reload 223AI and build up your supply of loaded ammo in that chambering.

Another reason to stick with .223 is that it is a mild chambering & therefore your barrel will last far longer. If you shoot .22-250 or 220swift and shoot a lot of rounds at targets or prairie dogs, you can eat up your barrel.

So, get the Savage or Rem & buy ammo with good brass to save up. Free-float it & bed it as mentioned when time permits.

* I spent many hundreds of hours on benchrest.com when I was going to do a custom rifle. Also, there are a variety of varmint web sites. For a real evenhanded discussion from another source, I like a former benchrest shooter & varmint dude turned reseller. He has a discussion of your choices in his cataloge: www.kinneman.com
Here is where he discusses his "RemBR": www.kinneman.com/Page 2.html

26" 10FP served me perfectly well until I got my 700 Police. No comparison but then, the Remington is about 80% more expensive. The Savage was accurate and I was able to get a very acceptable trigger out of it.

Swamp Yankee:

i just really have to bring the point about you saing that .223 is good if your not reloading at the time, when he specificly mentioned that he wanted it to be easy to reload!

why oh why do ppl here insist on giving extra opinions on things that are either unessasary or they dont have first hand experience of it, it's VERY annoying, i'd rather have 1 really good reply to a post than 30 BS from ppl who just want to boost their ego! i know i may be looking into this particular post a little too much but i seem to come across far worse examples in most posts from ppl who just give their 'ideas' instead of hard facts!
Another main point is that ppl reply to posts sometimes mention other and say basicly how the other persons advice was completly wroung and you should follow theirs, then of course the same with the next person 2 repy etc etc etc
:cuss:

sasnofear, relax. From the phrasing of pinetree64's first post, it's not clear if he's now reloading, or wants to begin reloading. So, there's not a thing wrong with Swamp Yankee's comment.

All of us need to remember that what we think we mean isn't necessarily what someone else gets from a message. No facial expressions, no body language, no quick re-phrasings...

So chill out, everybody...

I own a Rem 700VLS in .223 and with the load it likes it is extremely accurate. The 700 allows easy trigger change which I like. Although the VLS needed to be free floated - cannot understand why Remington does not free float their varmint barrels to begin with.

As far as Savage - heard a lot of good things on Savage accuracy. Shooting Times a few years back performed a .223 shootout using various brands of rifles and ammo. In their test it was the Savage that turned in the best overall accuracy if memory serves me. Although it does not mean that all Savages will be more accurate than all Remingtons. Since you mention inexpensive - the Savage might be the way to go.

I really don't think that you could find a more ecconomical cartridge than .223.
The new new .223 WSSM is an interesting offshoot, but I think the cost of ammo/ reloadable brass would be a bit prohibitive at this time.

I have a Ruger Km77VT topped with a Tasco 14x SS scope that shoots really accurately out to ranges that would make yer eyes bug out...:what:
