.22lr rifles. 10/22 vs. a bolt action vs. a lever action.

savage makes a great and accurate bolt gun that is in that price range.

would a henry lever action be a lot more accurate than a stock 10/22?

Damn near anything would be more accurate (and feed better) than the stock 10/22 I had, but some others seem to have different experiences.

For an inexpensive, accurate .22 rifle, I'd recommend a Marlin 60 and a decent scope.

However, I think levers are a lot of fun, and the Henry would be a great choice for that price range (Marlin 39 is my favorite, but higher in price).

Marlin's bolties are cheap and accurate. I'd get a scope, though, to really use the accuracy best. CZ's are really nice guns for a bit more money.

No I don't work for Marlin.:)

The Henry 22 rifles have gotten good reveiws in the press. Its harder to mount a scope on a Henry than the other two styles of rifles.

The 10-22 has been talked about so much here there is not much i can add. Do a search.

I just bought a Marlin 981t tube fed 22 bolt. It cost me $173 with tax. It will shoot 1" and smaller groups at 50 yards with bulk ammo. Hope this helps.

If you are going to buy a 10/22, put an aftermarket barrel on it instead of buying the Ruger heavy barreled version. The barrel is really easy to change. My 10/22 works just fine, but accuracy is something to be desired.

Savage makes nice bolts, including several heavy barrel models, and one with nice target sights. They also have pretty good semiautos. I'm considering the savage bolt with the target style iron sights.

CZ makes nice bolt rifles. Can't go wrong with them. Their iron sights are nice, too.

Marlin, nice bolt rifles. And the 39A is a fine lever rifle. Their semi-autos are also good. Marlin doesn't make a single undesirable rifle, actually.

The Winchester bolt rifle is just a copy of an Eastern-bloc .22 rifle.

The henry's have a slick action, but the receiver is an aluminum cover over the action...

+1 Marlin 60.
This passed sunday, me and a few friends decided to play around with our 22's on the cattle farm. :) My Marlin 60, my brothers Henry H001, and my girl freinds Chipmunk 22. I'll wager we shot 4 boxes of Federal bulk with most of it going through mine. I had'nt cleaned my marlin for at least 1000rds before, so I expecting it to have a few minor problems..............not one problem not even a dud round, and accuracy was great through it all.

the Henry H001 (scoped) worked fine and hit most of what i aimed at, but would have been better with irons IMO, or a btter scope. The Chipmunk was way to small for me to shot properly, as im 6'2" 250lbs.

After prying my rifle back from them i got a big grin that just would'nt go away, as i heard my girl say she wanted one and my brother wishing he'd never sold me that little Marlin 60. :D

As for accuracy and reliability, nothin in the price range comes close.

I am a great fan of Ruger single-action revolvers, but honesty compells me to say a Marlin or Savage bolt-action rifle would prove more accurate than a stock 10/22. Please do not misunderstand. Ruger 10/22s are quite reliable in my opinion, but their accuracy is not on a par with their mechanical reliability. If it were, then a 10/22 would cost more than its current asking price.

If you would care to elaborate on the intended purpose for this gun, then you will receive better advice. Personally, I am partial to a good bolt-action as a plinker. If this gun might be pressed into service as a self-defense rifle, then I opt for a clip-fed semi-auto. I hope you find these recommendations useful.

If you would like to see all the after market parts one can exchange on a Ruger 10-22 rifle go to www.rimfirecentral.com They can be made into tack drivers. My Marlin 60 is a pore shooter when compared to my tuned up Ruger 10-22. But for real accuracy go bolt action Anschutz and Cooper rifles.

Fundamentals: Bolt actions are very accurate. Lever actions are lots of fun. Semi-autos have to be kept really clean, and (if they're rimfires) are sensitive to ammo differences.

I'd like to add pumps to the fun category.

i have a 10 22 with a 100 dollar bull bbl and stock also have a Savage MKII .22 bull bbl that came stock with the accutrigger both shoot one hole 5 shot groups at 50 yds off the bench . the Ruger had to have the bbl to make it shoot. the Savage did it out of the box after breaking it in . i use Agulia Super Extra 38 gr . they are Eley primed.
