background...

I've loaded "full boat" for a .357 mag. revolver with Aliant 2400 with good results.

I'm setting up shop to start casting and my first cast load will be for 7.62x39 in a Saiga (sporter AK) and I've seen load recommendations for using Hercules 2400.

Can someone please tell me how these powders differ....

thanks in advance.

Alliant bought out Hercules several years ago, then moved operations from New Jersey to Virginia. So Alliant 2400 is supposedly the same as Hercules 2400. But I have repeatedly read that current production Alliant powder is slightly faster than the original Hercules product and charges should be half a grain or a grain less than in old data. Current data would be even better.

Same powder. 2400 is a pretty fast powder for the 7.62x39, it may not give you the right port pressure to cycle the action of your Saiga.

thanks for the responses....

I want to try the 2400 for a couple of reasons...

1. I have it
2. I want to down load to ~1,700 fps for 50 yd plinking with my own cast boolits (Maybe even avoiding the need for a gas check)
3. I'm hoping to get reliable action cycling without ejecting the brass into the next county.

any body out there ever accomplished this with home cast and the AK action?
