it's almost time to start blasting groundhogs in PA; my selected weapon is a Savage 111G in .25-06 w/ Simmons ProSport ProHunter 6 - 21 x 44 scope; I am 'sighted in' at 100 yards w/ Remington CoreLokt 100gr softpoints from deer season;

we switched our reloading press at the last minute & still getting stuff we need for it...no custom load yet; I purchased a few boxes of Winchester 90gr positive expanding point ammo at a good price (nearly 1/2 price of Federal Nosler Ballistic Tip ammo)...Winchester box says it's for varmints...never used it before;

anybody use this stuff & what to expect? thanks

I'd think that .25-06 is a bit much for groundhogs, but to each his own. What to expect? Noise, recoil, and a red mist!

The last time I used my .25-06 for praire dogs, I found that if you shoot them low, they'll pop about 15 feet straight up. I was using Sierra 75 gr. Hollow points loaded to 3690 FPS.

I use a .220 Swift with 55 gr. moly v-max's at 3950 for most of my varmint work these days. Got about 25 of 'em on Sunday. Girlfriend was taking the closer ones (<200 yards) with my .22 Hornet. She got about a dozen. I was so proud!:D

LOL

We got some BIGASS groundhogs here in PA. A .25-06 might just make them mad! :D

I hunt them with a .243 using 55 gr Nosler BTs and I've had people tell me that's overkill. I don't think it matters what ammo you use. A .25-06 won't leave much more than a few pieces of fur, if that. I have found Winchester ammo to be fairly accurate when I've used it in my rifles.

Sight the rifle with the new round and have a ball with it. The .25-06 will really raise cane with a hog, they will give you the "happiness of a FINEREDMIST". It does make space travelers out of prairie dogs and it will explode hogs.
