I may have an opportunity to pick up one of these rifles (WASR 10 in 7.62x39). Which in essence is an AK clone.

While I'm always hesitant when I think I have a good deal in the works, $250 seems like a deal I can't pass up. Any thoughts on this? I don't really need this rifle but would eventually like to pick up an AK clone. As with many $$ is tight with the holidays just being over. Plus this would cut into my AR15 slush fund which is a rifle I really want.

The Gun is in good condition adn comes with 1-10rd and 2-30rd magazines. Plus a few rounds of ammo.

If it's a WASR-10 hi cap, which the inclusion of 30rd mags would seem to indicate, and it's in good working order then that is a nice price. I'd snap it up. And did, for about $50 more than you did just over a year ago.

BryanP,

Frankly, I'm not familiar with all the variences of AK's. I had a couple of them, years ago, when they started hitting the US shores but have long ago traded them away. Hence the reason for wanting this one.

I have read some info on the net about the WASR 10's being some of the better AK clones out there. Are there any markings or stampings that I should be looking for to assure that I am getting a WASR? I presume that on the gun somewhere there would be a stamp along the lines of "WASR -10" along with the usual serial number and importer markings.

Also from your comment "If it's a WASR-10 hi cap" it seems that WASR 10's came in both a hi cap version, those capable of taking standard 30rd AK magazines. And a version that only took 10rd mags. Is this correct?

Regards,
Rob

WASR-10s are the bottom of the barrel in terms of AKs. I have one, and I like it, but it's a "beater" gun and that's the truth. $250 is a good price, but certainly not a fantastic price.

The vast majority of the WASR-10s have been converted to accept standard AK mags. Just test it with a mag if you want to make sure.

The WASR-10 is probably toward the bottom of the totem pole for AK variants, but most owners--including me--think they work great. There may be a trigger slap issue, or the sights could be canted a bit. If it's a more recent model, it's less likely these will be a problem. Can you try it out before buying? Even if you can't try it out first, the odds are heavily in your favor that it's worth at least $250, especially with the extras. And if there is a problem, you can probably fix it yourself for less than $40. I don't know who the seller is, but unless you have some reason to suspect them, it's probably a very good deal.

Thanks for the comments. I wasn't aware that the WASR was on the lower end of AK clones. As a matter of fact I thought I read on the net somewhere that they were on the upper end of quality - but I could be mistaken here.

In any event I should find out Monday if the rifle is available. Its a Private sale, the owner posted the gun at $300 on another web site and I made an offer of $250. He said that if he couldn't get more for it by then, I could have it at my offered price.

Currently I'm pretty sure I'll pick it up if its still available.

Regards,

Rob

Follow Up

I picked up the rifle yesterday. The initial inspection showed a rifle that has been shot very little and was in very good condition.

The rifle came with instruction manual 2-30rd mags, 1-10rd mag and a handfull of loose ammo. Of course there was a cheapo comblock sling on the rifle too.

Upon further inspection the rifle apears not to be a true WASR 10 as ID'd here (http://www.ak-47.us/WASR-10.htm). The "cap attached to the muzzle" that is referenced is not present on my rifle. It has a straight cut muzzle. The rifle does have the scope mount on the left side of the receiver. Also the rifle is engraved SAR-1. So I'm wondering if this is some cross between a WASR and SAR models. In any case I'm happy with it, pending some range time.

On my way home I stopped off at Georgia Arms and picked up 200 rds of Wolf FMJ ammo to go blasting with the next time I can get out to the range.

The SAR-1 is considered a better model than the WASR-10, it was originally imported as a high-cap. Beware of canted sights, but sounds like you got a great deal.

Check out:
ARFCOM AK47 Board
for more info than you can possibly use.

My SAR was $290 back in '99, plus shipping and transfer. If it hasn't been shot much and is in good condition, that's a good price. Mine had a bad trigger pull and some slap, but I fixed that. Go here if you have the same problem. My rear sight block is sitting at about a 45 degree angle, but it still shoots alright. I picked up a Norinco 84S a few months ago and it's WORLDS apart from the Romanians...

I got my WASR-10 hicap from AIM about 3-4 years ago, it was $239came with 4 mags too. but this was when you could only get them with that 'thumbhole' stock. Still a decent blaster even after around 5 cases through it.

$250 for an SAR-1 is a smokin' deal right now... especially since they don't make the SAR series anymore. Prices are on the rise, and you got very lucky on this one. The few SARs I saw at the last gun show in this area were in the range of $450.

A note about SAR vs WASR - The SAR will have oval dimples approximately one inch in length, one on either side of the receiver just above the mag well opening.

Bulldog,

The gun definetly is a SAR 1. It has the "oval dimples approximately one inch in length, one on either side of the receiver just above the mag well opening." you referenced.

Plus all of the other markings are the same as on the above site.

Only my SAR 1 has the added benefit of having the scope base attached to the receiver.

FWIW - I shot this rifle today and it shoots great, with NO trigger slap.

I've also decided to trade this gun for a Glock G21, so if anyone has one that they'd like to trade (face to face ONLY) in the Atlanta Georgia area send me a PM.
