I am currently doing some experimenting in 28 gauge load development, for both dove and grouse hunting. below are the loads and patterns (all done at 40 yards, with a IC out of my CZ ringneck SxS, 28 gauge, 28 inch barrels). The hulls used for all loads are Fiocchi, as i have alot of those hulls, and don't mind if i loose them while hunting. The shot used is a 50/50 mix of nickel plated #7 and 7 1/2 hard Lawrence shot. All primmer used are cheddite 209, and i have observed a notable velocity difference between and IC choke and a IM choke, so there is two different averages. Average velocities are based of 10 fired shells, 5 from the IC choke and 5 from IM choke.

All load data is based off Ballistic Products Book - Dove Magic. In conversation with the load developer guy at Ballistic Products, he stated that the RO28 can be used are a replacement for win wads, just will get less pressure and in turn - less velocity - when loading euro hulls.

My goal is to develop a load that pushes 7/8 OZ of lead around 1,300FPS. If you have any pet loads, i would be interesting in hearing about them.

21.5 Grain Blue Dot, 3/4 OZ Lead, Fiocchi RO28 wad:
IC average: 1317 FPS
IM Average: 1334 FPS

Thanks,

Isn't that pushing the limits on shot size and choke?
I always did better on Partridge with 6 shot on both 410 and 16 ga. You're kind of in the middle.
Have you patterned factory loads to compare?

I have patterned some factory loads - i will post that info later on today. I don't quite know what you are meaning by pushing the limits on shot size and choke?

I mean the shot size is small for killing at 40 yards and the choke doesn't offer a good pattern at that distance.
I had much better luck running 6 shot and a cyl and mod, or a mod and full.
Sometimes velocity isn't your friend. It can cause shot to deform.

Why do you want 1300+ fps? Dove aren't armored plated. Speed tends to blow patterns more open. Try shooting 1200-1250 max
