While still staring at the Win Mod 23 16 guage in store for $310 , I glanced to the side and saw a(just in store) late 80's vintage Wingmaster 870 lightweight in 28gauge with a modified barrel , it jumped to my shoulder and for $350 all thoughts of the old Winchester 16 went out of my mind . It appears as new so blue and shiny, so trim and it goes "snick -snick" . The ribbed barrel seems like 26" and has an ivory colored middle bead. I'm in love! I never had a (heart pitter patter) 28gauge before! I can even over look the 'fluer'd lea' impressed checkering:barf: And the bowling ball shiny RKW finish on the stock, this and my Rem mod 31 lightweight 20 deluxe are gonna show them Purdey toting Clint Eastwood quail lodge snobs a thang or three!

Great! (Covet,covet)....

28 gauge shotguns have an attraction about them hard to resist. In your hands, that WM should be a death ray on quail, and a nice little toter for other game also.

Enjoy...

If you found a Model 23 in that gauge for that price you should have bought it. Was it possibly a Model 24?

It's a great gauge that I've only recently come to know but it hits the clay targets as well as the 20 with not as much recoil.

28 gauge Wingmasters are great guns and not all that easy to find because they don't stay on the shelves very long.

Congrats.

Gordon, you have a unique way of ticking me off! :)

First, you come up with a Chief's Special Target for an obscenely low price, now you come up with a Remington 28 gauge for a decent price.

I've been in the market for a 28 for almost a year now. I really want a Stoeger Uplander, but haven't been able to find one to handle before I buy.

Sigh.

Good on you!

I THINK Eric the Ammoman has decent case lots of Winchester 28 gauge AAs. I'd suggest you get a case, shoot those up and keep the hulls to move into reloading.

Congrats on a great gun in a great gauge!

Yep - you are gonna be spoilt. Payload to bore is unique - "it does better than it's supposed to". It is due to a short shot string.

Oh you will break as many if not more birds, be it clays or game , and not have the recoil.

Get a Reloader , these reload easy and a bunch of loads for the shot and powder used.

Yep - next we will hear Gordon bought a "picker upper"... one of them fellows scouring the range snagging hulls. You get where you can spot a 28ga hull at 20 paces. :)

It was a Mod 24 Win my goof. With tax & lic Remmy was $400 . I can't find reference to a Mod 23 Winchester though.:)

Winchester M23 was a SxS. Imported. Priced to be an option for those who could not afford the M21.

Holy smoke are they proud of 28ga shells, when you can find them!!!!!!! Time I order a case HALF WAY reasonable and pay the postage, they aren't gonna be used for clay birds by me! I'm gonna patern a few dozen and hunt them!!

Many shotgunners benefit from reloading their ammo. The 28 gauge owner/operators that I know all load their own. It's the best way to have affordable ammo.

And while many of us scavenge hulls at the range, one has to be fast to beat folks to an empty 28 gauge AA/STS hull lying on the ground. That should tell you something.

Time to pick up a MEC, a scale, and manual,a hundred bucks worth of components, and a case of STS loads....
