There's a gun shop in the local area that I'm in that has a 2nd Gen '51 Navy for sale. I haven't got a clue as to values on real Colts. He's got a price of $500 on this thing and from what I've seen on GunBroker that doesn't appear to be a high price. Either that or the sellers on GB are just nuts.

I've got a couple of repros that I wouldn't mind getting rid of in trade for that gun if he's interested. My question is what a '51 2nd Gen in good condition should be worth retail. I've examined the gun and it appears that it has probably been fired but is extremely clean with no obvious dings or faults. What kind of price range is reasonable for something like this? I know what I'm into for the two I'd trade and I'm not hurting to get rid of them but that is one purdy Colt sitting all by itself in that case.

FJ that is certainly a good buy on the '51 but take a good look at it. The outer slip cover (thin cardboard open on both ends), then the cardboard box and all paper work should be included.. Plus a heavy dark brown paper sheet that wrapped the piece up in. Take a close look at the cylinder to see if there is any cylinder stop drag show on it.

And finally check the the grip frame very close. It should be nickel plated. I have two '51 NIB, never fired, but they are certainly not mint. The plating is so thin I think it evaporates over time. Could be where someone polished it off with polish. But check it out closely.

The store sellin' prices around here in the Mojave So.Cal are $699-$799 and they ain't budged a bit...mind you they are as new unfired with no boxes... Pocket models 2nd gen at about the same price.
So use a book as a guide but that's less than wghat buyers are payin' and shop keeps are lettin' them go for.
I'd say that $500 would be a decent buy.
What were you gonna offer to trade for that you were willing to trade off for a Second Gen '51 Navy?

I've got a Pietta '60 Sheriff that I'd let go in trade and a Uberti '62 Police. I'm not in a hurry to unload either one, they're just two that I could part with if I found something that took my fancy. I saw a 1st Gen 2nd Model Dragoon yesterday at a gun show and I didn't even bother talking trade. Even if he was agreeable to the idea I'd have still owed him around $50,000 and that would have made the impending divorce seem cheap when I brought it home. Besides, I like my wife enough not to bring home a gun that she might just use on me when she got the bill.:)
