what commercial brands of ammo make 30.06 that are safe to shoot in a m1 garand? what FPS and grain do i look for. thanks.

The safest thing to do is get an adjustable gas plug. The pressure curve of slower burning powders can cause troubles.

You might get lucky by sticking with 150gr FMJ commercial ammo but you never know.

Just get an adjustable plug then you can shoot whatever you want for the most part.

+1 on the adjustable gas systemplug. Very easy: screw-in, click it clockwise with an allen wrench until it cycles reliably. Voila!

Federal has ammo specifically for the Garand or order from CMP and get greek ammo made for the Garand.

+1 on adjustable gas plug. Rather than risk damage to your vintage rifle, it's better to go with something you KNOW will protect it, rather than just shooting and hoping for the best, or handloading specifically for it. Having the ability to use whatever ammo is available is important.

Hornady and Federal load M1 specific ammo. Hornady loads 168 grain match grade ammo. Federal loads 150 grain FMJBT's and 150 grain FMJ's under their American Eagle brand, 168 grain Sierra Matchkings under their Gold Medal brand, 150 grain Gamekings, under their Vitalshok brand.
Reloading makes the search go away.
"...adjustable gas plug..." Thousands of rounds of standard factory ammo have been fired out of M1 rifles, long before those existed with no fuss.
Any factory load using less than a 180 grain bullet will do. No light magnums.
Go here for free .pdf manuals. Note the need for the provided UN & PW.

You take a chance firing commercial rds without a adjustable gas screw.
Yes thousands of rds of commercial ammo have been fired through Garands without damage but damage does happen.
Metal fatigue does not happen overnight it is accumalative. Who knows how much stress has been already put through your old war horse.
Commercial ammo "can" bend your op rod out of spec or worse"can " crack the heel of the receiver from the bolt slamming into it at accelerated rate from the wrong ammo.
Stick with good quality surplus, Hornady and Federals Garand specific loads, handload or use a adjsutable gas screw. There are plenty of options so why would you take a gamble?
Do ya feel lucky?

A gun club in Calif. (friend of mine is a member) collected recipes for the Garand, I have the in a box under my reloading press I think...if I can put my hand on it I'll get back with you. There was several pages of them. If not I'll get my friend to snail mail me copy's.

As everyone above has said...If ya don't reload get the plug. Price of ALL Garand safe 30-06 is nuts. Even the HXP is about 60 cent a round now. I reload my own at 35-40 cents a piece.

get a gas plug and you can shoot ANY 30'06 through your Garand. Mine likes Federal 180-gr PowerShocks.
