I'm using the pictured 165gr RNFP bullet for some pistol powder gallery loads in 30-30, and have a question regarding the crimp groove.

The data I'm using comes from here, and is based on a 170 grain bullet of similar shape. It cites an OAL of 2.550", which appears to be SAMI's maximum length.

If I seat my bullet to the crimp groove, it is 2.500".

Assuming I work up for the lowest charge level, am I good to go with using the crimp groove on my bullet?

Yes! That bullet will be good to about 1,500fps. (W/O gascheck). They’re very popular with the cowboy action shooters.
2.550” is the longest that will cycle AND eject “unfired” from a Marlin l/a. The Winchester M94 will work with something slightly longer, I just don’t remember exactly how long… maybe 2.650” OAL.
I suggest 7.5-10.0gr of Unique, or something similar. GreenDot and RedDot are also good.
Don’t under estimate how powerful they are! My brother while in the USAF while stationed in Northern Maine, was teaching my nephew and Boy Scouts troop to reload. One meet, they cast up a coffee can of Lee 150gr FNGC .309” very similar to your bullets. At the next meet they loaded them in .30/30 cases using a Lee classic hand loader with approximately 7.5gr of Unique. (Chronos about 1,250fps from 20”bbl). After their range session he had several dozen left over. A young coworker was going to upper NY state, home for Christmas holiday. He was given two dozen to use to practice, and “something for rabbits” (snow shoe hares). After several hours deer hunting and seeing nothing but rabbits, he decided to load up “something for rabbits “, and walk fence rows back to the house. As luck would have it, he jumped a doe! He shot it running away at about 60yds with a Texas heart shot (between the hams!). He recovered the spent bullet from under the hide on an opposite shoulder! Nose was flattened (riveted) but otherwise intact. Penetrating 30” of deer… Almost, but not quite a .32-40 factory load equivalent. They’re beer can accurate at 50yds.
I run the gaschecked bullets to ~2,200fps (mine cast to .311”). They’re 2-3”

accurate at 100yds. Kills deer and pigs better than jacketed…
I like .3031 powder at 30gr. Imagine that! But don’t use that with the non-gaschecked bullet. They’ll shoot shotgun patterns and badly lead your barrel.

Added: be VERY careful to avoid double charging the cases! A 6-10gr charge of pistol powder occupies less than 1/2 the case volume. It’s possible and very easy to double charge a case.
It’s very possible to destroy a good rifle with a double charge.
