I'm trying to decide if I should stick with 150 grain or try 170's in my Marlin 336 in 30-30. I have read more than a few times that a lot of guys have noticed that the heavier bullets seem to shoot more accurately in their guns.

So what do you like in yous?

It may depend a lot on the exact bullet used, but mine shoots a particular gas checked 150 better than a particular gc 170 that I have on hand.won't hurt to experiment some and see what happens.

Bullitholtz. Try 32 grains of W-748 in Winchester or Remington cases under a Speer 170 grain HotCore Flat Point (HCFN) with CCI 200 primers. Trim all cases to within +/-.002" of each other and crimp with a Lee FCD. This gives me 2050 fps average from this ol' Jackhandle...

My 60 year old Wincherster M-94 puts these with a three shot group of 1 5/8" spread at 100 yards...Not only do they shoot flatter, they hit harder...

are we talking jacketed, plated, or lead?

Sorry bout that!

Jacketed primarily but anything that works would be nice to know about!

Locally I have Hornady, Sierra, Remmington and Winchester bullets available, anything else(Speer mainly) I'd have to order on-line.

Where are you guys that are shooting gas checked lead getting your bullets at these days?

Is this strictly for deer hunting?

Reason I ask is, I use mostly 125 grain Sierra HP/FP bullets in mine for coyotes.

CAUTION: This is 1.0 grain over present day 130 grain MAX Load data from Hodgdon.
I use 36.0 grains H-4895 for 2,400+ FPS.

My old 94 Winchester will shoot 1 1/4" 100 yard groups with open sights when I can see them good enough to do it.

H4985 and 150 grain Winchester PP for a 2007 336W. Shoots 3 touching (cloverleaf) hole at 100 yards.

125 Grain Sierra HPFN with VV N120 (load is not listed), I created this on my own. I can shoot it to 2500 fps, but I like to shoot this bullet at 2150 fps. At this speed it has no recoil, and is very accurate. It will do its job within 100 yards at this speed. Basically a .357 load from a 30-30. This is my wife's 50 yard deer load.
Again! N120 is not listed for this bullet, but works.

Hey rc...Just knew first lier didn't stand a chance...:D

I tried 110 and 125 grain bullets with little success. My ol' Jackhandle tended to spray them everywhere. Did get some fast 110 grainers though...

Hey! I know the feeling.
It's hard to outshoot anybody on the internet if you post first!

I would say my 94 shoots the 125 grain much better then any 150 or 170 load I have tried in it.

Factory 150's go 3"+ or so.

My go to load for the 30-30 was 150gr Speer FN over a max load of IMR3031.
I have tested the new 160gr Hornady FTX lately using 31gr of H4895 and that chronographed at 2080fps average. I only tested 5 rounds for velocity but not for group in a model 94. I'm thinking it has good potential for accuracy in a nice in between weight.
It's just tough to consistently see the target/sights at a 100yds.

NCsmitty...Need to borrow my store bought readers?

Before I started reloading I use 170 grain Remington Cor-Loct and they did fairly well. Like you they could get into a 3" circle if all was right. I don't know. Mine just seems to like the 170 grainers...And I'm not going to argue with it...

I got some targets if need be for the 150 grain Win PP. I don't put them in there everytime, but it is always 1/2" or less.

With the 125 grain they shoot really good at slower speeds, but when bumped up 350 fps they get about 1" to 1.5" at 100. Decent hunting accuracy.

Federal factory 150gr are pretty stout and accurate in my 336W.

I went with some 125gr Sierra JHP and 150gr Core-Lokt and Varget, R15, and AA2230.

I cranked the 125gr up to 2650fps, and they worked about the same as the 150's.

Accuracy was pretty good, meaning 1.5-2in at 100yards with 3-9x scope.

I made some 160gr Hornady FTX with IMR 4064. My dad loves those.

my (actually, i gave it to the wife) glenfeild 30-30 likes the hornady 150 fp about the best of any i have tried. so for deer hunting, it is either those, or the winchester 150g hollow points (loaded ammo). those hollow points are KILLERS!
