I traded a shotgun for a 300 weatherby magnum. I am looking for a recipe: bullet powder primer and brass to use for whitetail. Please before everyone starts telling me that is too much gun this is all I have to work with right now. I would like to use a 180 grain bullet. Any suggestions.

Yes, that is a lot of gun for a small white tail. Two of the main powderscforvthis big cartridge are IMR7828 and IMR4831. Suggest you get a bullet that will hold together and keep the velocity to no more than 2600fps for shots less than 200yards. You can get a 180gr bullet to 3000fps, which is too fast.

Get the manual for the bullet you are using, plus, get Lyman #49.

Thanks for the information. Would you think the Barnes Bullet would suffice?

I use a .300 WM and drive hornady 180grn ssts to almost 3100. Ive found that it IS overly destructive, but not as bad as one would expect. Those X-bullets, or even some of the cheaper bonded cores might make a good option. You can also download, tho i think 28-2900 is more along the lines of where i would want to be.
My SSTs tend to blow a fist size hole out the opposite side of our 120-180lb deer, as long as you dont hit the shoulder. Goats which are as small as 8"s thru the shoulders usually end up with golfball size holes in them.

I use the 180 tsx with IMR 4350 at 3000 fps,for black tails in bear country. Little meat damage.

my friend and hunting partner has the .300 weatherby magnum vanguard. he loads the max charge or close too of imr7828 and uses nosler bullets (180 grain partitions and/or ballistic tips) when shooting the ballistic tip it shoots exceptionally well, and i've seen it drop a lot of whitetails DRT (dead right there). and it does have a nasty crack when it shoots. anywho, i myself have .300 win mag and shoot the IMR7828 with the 180 grain Nosler partition and i've been extremely pleased with it. It is an awesome load for whitetail and highly accurate as well with 74.5 grains. The partitions shoot well in both guns, but i think the boat tail design bullets shoot a little tighter. i've dropped 2 whitetails this year in their tracks pushing 300 yards with the above mentioned load. i don't see any reason to change with the results i've seen........
